I love the column...

I had a few ideas, some of which have been previously stated:

Consider adding bookshelves to either side. I was thinking something that carried on with the dining theme, maybe a buffet or bar. Pull your table out of the corner and center it in the space in front of the pillar (hang a beautiful chandelier, lined up with the column, wow!)

Consider flipping your space around and placing your living room closer to your kitchen. You can then create an office area where your table currently is, maybe have a bookshelf on the other side of the column. You can place your table somewhere else, maybe against the window (where I assume you are standing?).

Given the current layout, it made me wonder if you even use your table...if you only use it for entertaining, maybe you want to expand your living space and have an office/work area that can easily be converted into dining when you have company?

I love the idea of renovating your kitchen and absorbing the column into your counter. It would really make it so much larger, you could then add a sitting area all along it..

Love it though - good luck!

you have to tell us about your sink with the metal base. I'm renovating a home from the 40s and have been hunting these down forever! That one looks really unique!

I love the comments for this!

I keep a bi-monthly budget and use a spreadsheet to keep track of it all. It's an ever-evolving system (especially now that I've bought a house and am renovating) but it took me from being a damn poor student in credit debt up to my eye balls to a successful working woman. To start, I simply collected all of my receipts for a few months and created a budget based on how I spend.

The best advice I've ever been given is:
-Don't forget to pay yourself. Always have a little money for spending that isn't accountable - even if it's $10/week.
-Take your smallest debt and double the minimum payment. Everything else just meet your minimum. When that first debt is gone, transfer the money onto the next debt. This system will snowball, eventually paying your debt off faster and faster - but the best part? Your budget never changes.

It would have been nice to have more categories for the home blogs (I agree with the vintage request!) - I would also love to see a humor category (it doesn't feel right that my favorite and my best isn't here, I anticipate her posts like you wouldn't believe!)

I used one for years on my chandelier - it was ideal as a renter in that I didn't want to shorten the cord on my chandelier but with all the extra wiring it was uuuugly. By covering the wiring with fabric, I was able to clean it up. It also made the light fixture more flexible - as my chandelier hung in the middle of my living room, sometimes I needed to have it up higher, like when I moved furniture around for get togethers and didn't want people to bang their heads on it. So yeah, as a permanent solution it may not be so hot but for those of us that are renters and don't want to rewire a chandelier with every move, covers can come in handy. I actually got a lot of compliments on mine and by using a snap closure, it was easy to remove and clean when necessary.

I'm a visual person that has fought with an earring storage solution for years - incorporating storage into an every day tool is great! But then, my bedroom is full of sunlight in the morning so I wouldn't be dealing with the light hot earring situation.

I love all of these doors that fold open - but what about bugs? I know that some places don't have a lot of bugs (lucky!) but am curious - is there a similar design that incorporates screens in some way? (I have yet to see any, hence the question)

I love this thread, you should write more articles on guest etiquette!!!

Recently, I had an old high school friend come to stay. He booked (without discussing) a TEN DAY stay with us. He expected:
1. That we pick him up at midnight. In the middle of the week, where the office day starts at 8am.
2. Meal service for lunch/dinner and that we buy passes to the same music festival as him (total cost: $500).
3. I take time off to show him around (didn't mind but...)
4. To be left alone until 3pm. When you work from 8am to 4pm and you have a guest that expects you to take time off and then sleeps the whole time - well, that is just obnoxious.
5. To use all of our facilities, including phone/internet/TV/air conditioning/laundry, without any regard for us or our schedule.

He never once:
1. Bought us a meal
2. Cleaned up after himself
3. Made or helped with any meal preparation
4. Paid for anything

At day ten, I was happy to see him go. He won't be invited back - and as a result, we are embracing a five day (four night max) rule with all future guests. Even ones that travel across the country...

I think it wouldn't have been so bad if he had had at least a somewhat similar lifestyle to us. My husband, who works at home, went crazy the whole time. He went through the effort of making a fancy breakfast one day and our guest offered him "feedback". Needless to say, that didn't go over well.

As for us, when we stay with others we always arrive with a regional gift from our city (maple syrup!), toys for the kids (with parental approval), a list of places we want to go (on our own), info on a hotel we would happily bolt to, and most of all flexibility. If we are staying with others, we get up when they get up and leave when they leave. If they are at work all day, we go out and explore. We find out when they want to eat, we help with meals (if they let us!). Above all else, we ALWAYS clean up after ourselves and make our bed.

(what a rant)

You know, my husband also has a piece of leather furniture that he is really attached to. An old beat-up leather club chair - the cushion finally went on it and I took it to a shoe repair place to be fixed. While there, they dyed the leather (without asking!) - when I saw it, I was really surprised. The patina was still there but the colour was more uniform. A big improvement! So much so that I moved it into our living room, we get lots of compliments on it. My advice - consider asking someone that works with leather what they think. Take it a cushion to a shoe repair store, you might be surprised at what they tell you.

I agree with sweetchuck - I've used the umbra solution (bought at Chapters, here in Canada!) and found it to be really awesome! It does no damage to the books at all and is perfect for a bedside/book storage solution.

I would start by removing the doors (or having them open into the hallway!) and then adding floor to ceiling shelves around the window and floor to ceiling shelves around the door frame. I think this would create a nice balance in the room and really create a beautiful space to look in on. As your budget allows it, then you can add in a built in desk on one wall. If your budget is limited, do one wall at a time - it's worth the investment!
