We have policies in our house as we have five children (two now grown).
Bedroom doors are generally open, if open and someone is in the room, feel free to come on in.
If no one is in the room, you don't go in without permission and you never go through drawers, closets etc without express permission.
If the door is closed, knock.

Keep those mesh bags!
Each person in the house here has one (3 kids still at home), not only does it keep socks together, it stops fights about who's socks are who's!

I agree, that is a huge playroom!
As a mother of five I have learned a few things.

1. Organizing kids is nonsense, there is no such thing and if it is too complex they aren't going to do anything as it is too overwhelming.

2. Books, small things and big things is all the separation you need.
Books need to lay flat somewhere and not in too big of stacks, otherwise small hands have trouble getting them to stand up, or get all the pages into small wall slots etc.
Small things need a bin of their own or they all fall to the bottom and get lost under the big stuff.

3. No matter how big, beautiful or well organized the bedroom or playroom is, children want to be with people and want to play where the people are. Nothing will stay in a room where there are no people, so make room in the kitchen, dining room, family room or where ever the people are the most.

Not funny, but special...
We (my husband and I) went through a very very bad custody battle for my daughter many years ago. "The Grinch" would not allow my daughter to have any of her toys, except her one stuffy.
So daughter sits on Santa's knee a few weeks later, all she wants is her Snow White barbie doll and the dwarves that she had, back from "The Grinch".
Needless to say "The Grinch" was heartless and refused to give even those few items back, so we started searching and searching, day in day out, every store that sold toys in Toronto we went to, battling traffic, parking, shoppers. So then I started with the phone book (this was 1993 the internet was not a big thing then) and still no luck. Now we live in Ontario and there were none, absolutely none, to be found in the entire province, but we did find a very helpful lady at a big box toy store. The only set left in Canada were in Winnipeg, but she arranged for them to be shipped. not to the store, but to us directly, to our door, they arrived on December 23rd, just in the nick of time!
But the look on my daughters face, when she opened that present, I would have walked to hell and back again just to see that.

Kind of lovely in it's way, but that must be one very very well trained toddler!
Tons of sharp corners, glass table tops, a leaning mirror, shelves and stools that be great for climbing/falling off off and stuff on top to fall over and down on a head (ie lamps) PLUS a balcony off a child's room???

Why would anyone take their dog to Ikea to begin with?
As for Manland, same as poster above me!

We have darkish floors and northern light and are also lucky enough to be allowed to paint.
I went with a light sky blue on the walls and did throw pillows with the same blues in them, for on our brown leather couch and I painted much of our dark wood furniture in a creamy white.

I am an artist as well and also try to keep my prices down.
Most artist I know, will buy a frame of their choosing and charge a 100% mark up for the frame alone, increasing the price horrendously.
Expensive does not always = quality

Even my children had a plastic $100 playhouse out in the yard when they were young, nothing creepy nor immoral and she was a little girl.
Hell forget the little girl part, I want one!

Nice house if that's what you want, but agree isn't green just on the size of it.
As for being that size out of "necessity" that's just bs, sorry.
We live in a 1200 sq ft. town house, all six of us and our seven pets. I work from home and as it is a town house we have no property to speak of, no garage, no sheds or out buildings etc.

I grew up downtown, in a huge city, on the 19th floor, so my Aunt's house in the country was a wonder, it had:
-a screened in back porch filled with stuff and nonsense
-an outhouse
-chickens!
-a trap door in the floor of the kitchen that lead down to a dirt root cellar
-a woodstove
-the bestest second bedroom/guest room ever; it was only big enough for a single bed tucked under the eaves, a double dresser with a mirror and a chair.

The fridge is right beside the stove, with pictures on the side of it and a block of wood on top of it, with stuff on top of the wood lol.

Sorry but another granite or faux granite (which is what we currently have) hater here and for the same reason, I can't see what I am cleaning, I literally have to run my hand across every inch of the counter to find spots.

Books!
In small piles, large piles, neatly or not so neatly, on shelves, tables (or as tables) with things on top of them or bare.
I am suspicious of any home without at least a few books!

I was just going through the 2012 Small Cool entries and linked into this conversation, so I am very late.
Me, hubby, 3 kids, 5 cats, a dog and a turtle, are in a 1200 sq ft, four bedroom townhouse, with two levels, no garage, attic, basement or shed.
We are very comfortable thanks to organization and minimalism, but I think the Small Cool Contest needs a "4 bedroom" category :D

Average Home Sizes Around the World

Love the place, quite beautiful.
But I don't think it's very fair to the other contestants that truly live and make do with small spaces. The average size of a one bedroom is 800-1100 sq. ft., so at 999 it isn't very small at all.
I know it complies with the rules and it would be hard for AT to make further restrictions, but a one bedroom at 999 sq. ft is average, where as a 3 bedroom at 999 sq. ft is something to be admired.
