You need a pattern of some sort. Everything is a shade of brown. Try a patterned rug under the table that incorporates the blue wall, and other colors.

And, of course, ART!

If you want modern, I'd go with a darker finish rather than light. A light color will just draw attention to the fact that your table and chairs don't match at all. Aluminum paired with that beautiful wood is just too much of a contrast. If the table were a more modern-styled dark wood, I'd say go for it. But it's so traditional that the chairs would look out of place.

I have a modern, wood table with thrift/junk store chairs. I covered all the seats in the same fabric, but all the chairs are different. All chairs are similar in color to the table. That way they don't look like they were purchased together, but don't feel like a stuffy dinette set either.

I think #10 looks like it might be nicer to actually touch and use, but I like the look of #32 best.

I have a basket on the desk for the cats. Sometimes they sit in it, other times on the keyboard or behind the computer attempting to chew all the cords.

I'm convinced my cats are really puppies trapped in cat bodies who will chew anything left unattended.

Several years ago I bought a chenille bedspread with a geometric, square pattern on it. I loved it until, about two months after purchasing it, the chenille started to collect lint. There was nothing I could do to get it out. So instead of a white bedspread with white chenille squares, I had off-white/bluish chenille squares (and I didn't even have cats then which would have added to the problem). It was horrible. I ended up using it upside-down for another year or so then donated it. I'll never buy chenille again.

where is the living room? seems like you wasted two pics on the kitchen rather than adding one of the living room.
