A Peek Into the 2013 DC Design House

Ha! I have a cousin that is flipping houses in Flint. I myself live in DC where we see no signs of a bleak economy and would kill to be 'miserable' in Chicago!

Used to go straight to fabric.com - no more! They were riding the excuse that they had changed locations, but its been more than a year now and the inventory troubles continue. Watch your credit card statement. Often the 'out of stock' fabric is still charged.

I found a great horse print on the internet, but cannot find the artist (won't print and hang w/o artist permission/fee). Still living with a big blank wall.

Yeh. I agree with the negativity. If I'm not near a flea market, I go to etsy, craigs or eBay and try to avoid the Made In China stuff

My siblings and I, all 30 and older posed for a photo, standing in the open doorways of a long row of porta-johns (there are six of us). Yes, cheesy. But it was meant to be so. Now we all keep a copy in our bathrooms. We can remember the family every day, as we all now live far apart

We've installed a false baseboard which sits a few inches out from the wall, creating a kind of channel for wires and power strips. It helps to hide all the cords when your desk is not near an electrical or cable outlet. But I still have to look at the hideous router, sling box, and other evil minions that need to send out a signal.
Does anyone have a solution for those?

I agree with all above. As for fabric, if you're in NYC, go to the fabric district. I would die to be able to get there. I have had great luck with medium or heavy weight linens. You can even consider denim or heavy suiting fabric. Fabric.com has some great faux suedes(I have pets). Order swatches though.

Dark bamboo owner here...We have three cats and a dog. The floor must be mopped. I think the bamboo is more tolerant of wet mopping than the other hardwoods. I use dilute murphy's oil soap, followed by a dry microfiber wipe down to eliminate the streaks. My housekeeper was using the shark and I've asked her to stop because I believe it is taking up the finish.

Another 'dark bamboo' issue - does anyone have something for the little hair size scratches? All the furniture feet are padded, yet I cringe if someone scoots a chair along the floor.

Wow, so the kitchen isn't what you would find in a 1927 bungalow. Where do you draw the line? Leave out a microwave because the kitchen didn't have one in '27? I'm just happy the owners didn't mow the house down and drop a mcmansion on the lot.
Beautiful kitchen - love the countertops! Enjoy!

I believe it depends on the city. I remodeled an 1890 victorian. Kept the original stairs. Inspector made me put a handrail in for the small section surrounded by two walls. DC doesn't use the word 'Grandfather'.
Besides the children's safety, what about older adults? Beautiful job on the stair, but my mother couldn't visit - maybe that's a good thing :p

As a DC landlord with a small number of properties, I'm always frustrated by the response to adds: "I'd like to see your property." Try replying with credit score, or report w/in the last thirty days, written tenant references, proof of renter's insurance, why you want to rent the property. You will stand out like a rose! When the landlord provides an application, fill it out completely. I will let the property go vacant rather than accept the wrong tenant.

I would use the space b/t the bump out and the window wall to build shelves or inclose the whole thing (space and bump out) in a cabinet. Put a small chair on a 45° on the opposite side of the window - small library. Then put a sectional on the long wall b/t the bumpout and the half bath, with a chair opposite, at an angle (if it fits). Splurge for custom sectional if it uses the space more efficiently. Consider narrow table on castors to pull out for dining, leave against the stair when not in use. Use your sectional as a banquet for dinner parties
