Another idea -- you could simple hang a sheet over the railing, and fasten with some clothespins or industrial grips on Friday or Saturday night before brunch, then take it down during the week.

I'd try lining the fire escape w/ cut bamboo and florist wire or some sort of grass (think Hawaiian grass skirts). I don't know if this violates any sort of building or fire codes, but I think it will give you what you want.

Tie any outside upholstery into the inside upholstery. Start the outside on the inside by incorporating some plants around the sliding glass doors.

you might also want to try saturating it with cooking oil (or spray Pam). Let the sticker absorb it, then whipe it off.

My dog love to dig in the mud. I'm afraid I'm come home to mud throughout my house if I installed a dog door. BTW, I think they make dog doors that require a sensor on the dog's collar to open... maybe helpful if you're worried about keeping the dog door unlocked.

I bought one of the black frames from Ikea and did this. I sprayed it bright orange (several coats) and used the paper insert included with the frame as a template to have the mirror cut.

The mirror was about $60-$75 to have cut. A friend got it cut at a glass supplier in Brooklyn.
