We got chicks last August. We borrowed the things needed for chicks from friends (heat lamp, brooder box, feeders). having the chicks indoors was a lot of fun, especially for our 3 yo. holding them everyday got the chickens used to us and made them more docile. then we got a coop for "free" on Craigslist. We had to rent a truck, take off work and renovate it. One tip from our chicken-keeping neighbors was to make the coop secure. We dug a foundation, laid down cement blocks, wrapped the blocks in chicken wire that we bolted to the coop. This means that no animals can burrow into our coop so our chickens are safe and we can leave out their food witout worrying about rats. Chickens are noisy so talk to your neighbors first and give them eggs. Cleanining weekly makes the chickens and neighbors happy. We let the chickens out in the yard a couple times a week. They are a lot of fun. One chicken thinks she is a pirate parrot and flys onto my shoulder ever since she was a chick. Keeping chickens is fun, rewarding and quite an experience! I lived with my sister and her partner for 18 months. At one point, the partner had to referee our arguments. Still, they were doing me a favor when I moved out to Seattle without a job. They has to finally tell me to stopping baking late at might because the smell was waking them up. I think the way for sibs to be good housemates is to pretend you are housemates first and have all the discussions about food, personal preferences, responsibilities AND to try not to fall into the habits of your childhood...no care-taking, ancient stories and teasing about long ago stuff, no trash-talking the rest of the family. We live downstairs but we are the landlords. The upstairs apartment is carpeted, wall to wall. We provided high-end wireless headphones. When we advertise our unit we look for someone quiet and quiet hours are in the lease. Then we got a kid. We try to be considerate neighbors to our tenant, but sometimes the noise...i.e. temper tantrums can get excessive. When the tenant gets noisy, I try to remember that is the sound of the second mortgage layment. ;-) and i make cookies for our tenant when it gets noisy here. We also try to keep open dialogue about noise...hey how are we doing? Or apologize for an early morning shower or late night action movie that got loud. This communication happens easily because tenants have laundry priviledges so we get to see each other. I think this is key - seeing each other regularly and being mutually rspectful. But when the rubber hits the road, we are the owners and we do make that clear. How Do I Deal with Neighbor's Excessive Noise Complaints? Good Questions |

Gin and tonic! My OC - age 18 after a week of camping on the cheap, foraging berries for meals because we were broke...my family went to stay a few nights with my relatives at a nearby resort they frequented. My Irish aunt took one look at us & pushed us into hot showrs followed by cold G & Ts & shuffleboard! Later at supper, my duck l'orange went flying propelled by my fork. The rest of the night is a lovely blurry memory...something about killer muskies, night swimming, cute resort staff, beer and lost memories. Still love G & Ts! Bookshelfbacked with art or really cool wrapping paper? Use the mobile concept and hang stuff? Do you have any collections? Like a scarf collection? Or anything else that can be hung or displayed? A friend once painted poetry and quotes on a bed sheet for me to hang on the wall. What about painting a board with chalkboard paint? Another vote r the smoothie Popsicle! I make them all the time for our 3 yo. Great way to get good stuff not her, in a fun way. And yes, we do have Popsicles for breakfast too! Time-Saving Tip: Freeze Smoothie Ingredients in Muffin Tins |

For me, it was deciding what goes into my home instead of using all the hand-me-down things like my grandmother's ugly brown dishes and leftovers from my parent's home. When you deliberately you have, it seems you own it more. I agree with other posters about caring and comfort of others. My two best friends have dishelved homes with random things in them. When we visit, I always wonder if they were actually expecting us since there isn't any physical sign of welcome. Gladly there is always other signs of welcome but in my 40s I appreciate comfort. Five years ago we bought the first house we toured because it had everything on our list...especially location! We took a commi I college class that helped us define our priorities together. We also gave a marked up city map to our realtor highlighting the things that are important to us...public transit, grocery stores, parks, libraries. The one thing we gave up was defined entry space for wet clothing and shoes. The front door goes right into the living room...back door into the kitchen. Still working on the inevitable clutter with IKEA shoe cabinets and other solutions for limited space. Wanted and got an upstairs rental unit which has been invaluable when we both got laid-off and now when I am at home with our toddler. Don't plan on leaving anytime soon, but hope someday we'll have the same kind of luck and planning. What 'Must-Haves' Did You Let Go Of When Buying Your First Home? |

We got a freezer full of food from a co-worker, which was lovely and amazing! Don't forget your friends who became parents through adoption, as we did. In spite of not having had labor and delivery, those first few weeks were really intense. We were really grateful that all we had to do was focus on our baby and not the day's menu. I became a parent through adoption. Even before we were picked to be parents by our daughter's mother, our friends threw us a book & CD shower. It was lovely! Recommend it highly to all pre-adoptive parents. Friends and family gave us their favorite books so we got books for all ages. We love reading them and remembering how they were once gifts. Last year, the big hit with my toddler was the magnifying glass in her basket. She wanted to take it to church! I got several magnifying glasses from the Dollar Store. So we had a back up when it broke. This year we have bunny shaped sidewalk chalk. My Picks for A Well-Designed, Candy-Free Easter Basket |

A really good motion sensitive night light got us through nightimes with our little one. We also used an IKEA dresser with a curved foam changing pad. It had changeable covers that made it easy. Loved our Arms Reach co-sleeper and used until she got too big for it. I think the most important thing is to do what makes YOU happy. As other posters said YOU are the one who will notice the nursery. If it makes you happy, that is great. And it's important to do what makes you feel ready for that baby. I also echo the Ergo, still use it at year 3. Love it. What Are Your Nursery Must-Haves? Nesting a Nursery |

My 2-yo loves to use the hard boiled egg slicer to cut up bananas. She's good at cutting cheese on our slicer that is a wire on a wood block. My mantra for my "helper" is "I scoop, you dump." And I've learned to be ok with messes. The sink is a good, mostly safe play area too. How To Keep Babies Busy While You Cook |

Love this discussion - want to see some of those tv cooks do a live show with kids! We do the things listed above. My 2 yo loves to help and I've learned that "helping" may mean more mess but its worth it that she feels helpful. We also just moved our silverware to a lower drawer so she can help unload the dishwasher. How To Keep Babies Busy While You Cook |
