Actually, theres a lot new about this. I got the pleasure of talking to Rosanne who helped design these, and you'd be surprised. Modular furniture isn't new, but the idea that this furniture was built specifically for art students, being ecologically responsible, locally made, and built to be as expensive as other dorm room furniture is pretty nuts. They built the bed to loft by flipping because RISD students would constantly take the hardware off the beds for projects. Also, instead of slats, there is a full board underneath the mattress because students tended to store sheets of artwork under there and the paper would always get wrinkled. Also, the desks are made specifically to allow 18x24 sheets of paper. And the dining tables are pretty ingenious in how they built them to be sturdy without stretchers. Basically I do have to say that the sofas were a bit uncomfortable. The chairs' seat are curved upwards which is supposed to be better for your spine in the long run, but it's either more comfortable or less depending on the person (apparently there was only one person that thought it was more comfortable on the design team, and it wasn't Rosanne or Peter....). Also, they tend to be a bit tilty side to side, but thats probably cause when i sit i tend to rock the chair. I've used this furniture for 3 years and thought there was nothing too spectacular about them until Rosanne gave us a talk about the design process, and I was pretty floored, which i think reflects the whole "good design is as little design as possible" principle RISD Visit: How Fun School Was |
