The area where I live has a "first time home buyer" class, run by the local branch of the Neighborhood Housing Agency. The instructor was awesome and broke down the process from loans, predatory lending, choosing a realtor to the closing and we had guest speakers from various areas (attorney, relator, mortgage advisor from a local bank). It is such an overwhelming process (especially in this economy) that educating yourself is the best defense against a bad decision.
