I've always used a small handful of play sand, an old cloth and a enough water to make a dryish slurry. scrub until you're happy with the result, rinse one more time, run through the self-clean cycle on the oven, and re-season. works like a champ.

I've lived in Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Manhattan, London, and now Austin (and never in a building with a doorman). I've never felt insecure enough to need something like that.

I can't believe anyone actually uses an electric shaver. I started using a safety razor 20 years ago; every 5 years or so I try the latest and greatest electric, but nothing has ever come close to the safety razor for speed, quality, or comfort. As a bonus, a safety razor is easier to travel with. Gillette and Schick both seem to give good results, but the cheap generic single or double-blade razors are generally c*ap.

I shave in the shower with a fog-free mirror. It probably takes me less than 2 minutes.

I understand the sense of loss, but it's part of the cycle. Trees die, get sick, or are damaged every day. That's why we've made it a point to plant new trees periodically; We've planted 6 trees of various native species (about $30 each) since we moved into our house 10 years ago. It's doubtful that we'll personally see any substantial benefit from any of them, but as the 60 year-old trees which are already here start to die, these will be ready to take their place.

Neighbor who would vacuum her apartment in the nude while cranking the latest hip-hop tracks ... with her windows open. Probably would have been tolerable if she didn't look like a tattooed version of Divine.

I've always wanted to do this with MDF. Seems that chipping, denting, and moisture resistance would be big(er) problems particle board.

Good thing about MDF (and PB somewhat) is that they take stain REALLY well. you could so all kinds of interesting stuff with it. Instead of filling the seams, I would probably use some type of shallow relief on a grid that would make it easier to make selective repairs without ruining the look of the floor.

I'd love to hear how this wears.

Nice start. I could never narrow my own list down to 15, but I would probably start with A Pattern Language by Christopher Alexander. After this, my list goes nuts.

We have several large prints in our home, including several vintage originals. A couple of things to consider:
1.) With very few exceptions, vintage prints are expensive. A good alternative for many people is the huge number of high-quality giclee reproductions available for places like http://www.art.com.
2.) Especially with large prints, framing is hard to find and _very_ expensive (i.e. many times more than the print). Consider if you can get by with a smaller print or use non-traditional means of hanging them (e.g. http://www.posterhanger.com/)

Not really my style, but not bad ... at least in San Francisco.

We had a neighbor in Austin, Texas do the same thing a couple of years ago. What a nut job ... it's 100+ degrees here for months in a row.

My wife's first screen for any name was that no derivation of would be easy to make fun of. I didn't have the heart to remind her that kids can make fun of anyone ;-)

We ended up with Tristan and Emma.

Nice, but for $1,500 he could buy a server with enough storage to hold all of them and small enough to hide in a closet. With what he's already spent on AV gear, I'm guessing that would be a rounding error.

"You can never be too careful."

Wow, that's sad. I'm the parent of an 8 yo daughter and 10 yo son. The thought of letting them do something like this is frightening, but it's also necessary. Ironically, based on prior comments, I'd be less inclined to let my son do it (too implusive) than my daughter (very level headed and aware).

By almost every measure, kids are safer today than they were 20 years ago; cities are generally safer too. I can't say catagorically that I'd allow either of them to do this, but for many people, fear seems to have replaced common sense. That can't be healthy for parent or child.

mcQuaidLA ... I'm guessing that your knowledge of finance is limited to what you read on a cereal box. In fact, the items you've mentioned, mortgage interest deductions, homestead exemptions, etc. and much more are all available in some form or other to the owners of rental properties (e.g. interest and maintenance expenses, depreciation, and property taxes can all be deducted), also add in capital providers that don't pay taxes and hence have a lower cost of capital (e.g. pension funds and endowments), and renters see some rather generous benefits flow through to them (woo hoo ... free markets!!!).

W.R.T. the bailout, and increased conforming loan limits, I think they suck. There's absolutely no reason that tax payers should foot the bill for my, or anyone else's, poor choices.

Renters SHOULD be treated equitably, but they don't deserve a free option on other people's property.

This looks good, in contast to a house here in Austin (Texas) that someone painted black last winter. I'm guessing they're from somewhere with less sun and cooler temps. All summer I was dying to go by and ask them how it was working out.
