I also live in a row house with a similar hall and I think anything on the wall will make the space look wider. I would recommend a large, graphic piece of art opposite the openning (where the bikes are now located) to draw the eye to the most open part. Maybe remove the bench (is it truly used and needed?). Stagger a few pieces of art (or mirrors, chalkboards) on opposite sides of the wall.

I have planned a casual dinner with neighbours (and kids!) for the second weekend in February, but my husband invited a friend over for dinner tonight. He's doing the prep work, but I will be pleased to have our guest in a more organized home. Cleaning up (and maintaining!) the entry has been a huge relief.

We have a small built-in desk at the entry to the kitchen that is a catch all for everything. A small filing cabinet is underneath, which only makes it worse. It's a source of stress, aggravation and embarrassment since I pass it every day and regularly need to find what lands there.

Lots of good suggestions above, but don't rule out book slings. I just made and installed mine and with the right screws and wall anchors they are really sturdy. Plus, he can access his own books when he wakes up.

I used the Bygel containers and 2 rails (from Ikea) above my 5-year-old's desk.

It gives her access to lots of supplies without cluttering the small surface and as a bonus, they are super cheap (about $12 for everything) and colourful. She now heads straight there after coming home from school.

We got a play kitchen for our daughter for her 2nd birthday and she used it right away. My son, who is approaching 2, has been using it for months, making all kinds of things to serve to us. If you're a family that cooks and your kids are with you in the kitchen it will be a hit at any age. That being said, don't be disappointed if you don't get the big reaction at first. 2nd birthdays can be overwhelming and she may not really notice it for a week or so. I agree that accessories--pots, play food--are a must. Ikea has great cheap stuff that is also food safe.

This might not work for all kids (yes, in theory it's one more thing to do) but I can see this working for my 5-yr-old girl. I've been trying in the morning and at bedtime to just go through the list of things to do once an not nag her over and over. I think the visual cues would help and she would love checking each task off.

Bummis makes reusable pull-up training pants and you can search for retailers (on-line and brick and mortar) on their website www.bummis.com. We used them with our daughter but be warned--they don't hold as much wetness as diapers. You need to catch him on the first pee!

We found a flashlight much more effective than a nightlight--kept next to the bed it allows our daughter to light up the room if she wakes up and feels the need. That, a stuffed monster doll, and some "fairy mist" (essential oils and water in a spray bottle) keep her feeling safe in her room at night.
