Beautiful. You can tell that everything was deliberately and carefully chosen to work well with each other, which is necessary to create the cohesive flow to the space. It's a simple room, yet there's enough variety and texture to make the space interesting and dynamic. Very reminiscent of Thomas O'Brien. Well done!

Thanks for the comment on the dining room chairs. They were a craigslist find. Only $25 per chair. Almost everything you see in the dining room is from CL - dining table, chairs, rug and mirror. I put the room together for less than $500 thanks to CL.

Hi everyone. This is Melissa. Thank you for the kind comments. If you're interest in seeing more, including the before pictures, check out my blog at http://goodlookingthings.blogspot.com/

Wanted to answer a couple of questions/comments:

1. The tray was a $25 garage sale find.

2. The daybed is from Charles P. Rogers. I bought it 10 years ago, but they are still selling it at http://www.charlesprogers.com/iron-brass-sleigh-daybed-p-91.html?cPath=2_182

3. MsDonnaGirl, I agree with your comment about the paintings in the last picture. They are not in the same tone as the rest of the house, but I fell madly in love with the paintings and had to buy them. The console is an Ikea piece. It's not my first choice, but it's acting as a placeholder while I find the perfect piece.

I agree with lucitebox's comments about avoiding organic modern prints. The lines of the chair are so distinct and make such a statement on their own. I'd love to see a simple pattern, even a solid, on these chairs and maybe add some pattern with a pillow.

Great job on mixing up the texture. Texture add so much in a monochromatic room.

I actually like the midnight blue ceiling. I'm guessing it creates a restful and peaceful vibe at night.

This place has good bones in that everything is well placed and proportional, but I'm craving the finishing touches that give a home personality - tchotchkes from travels, plants, pictures, etc. With out these things, the place looks unfinished. Totally agree with design.va about the rugs.

It may be faster and possibly cheaper to put in new drywall over the textured ceiling. That's what I did in my kitchen an bedroom when I remodelled. My contractor would have spent way too much time and money removing the glue and crud left over after removing acoustic tiles that were glued directly to the ceiling (don't know what the previous owners were thinking). Instead, he installed thin drywall (I think they are only 1/4" thick) over the old ceiling. This not a do it yourself job, but sometimes, it's better to hire it our than do it yourself.

This reminds me of a hotel Kelly Wrestler redid in LA. The pool cabana had the same type of tile. They didn't have the budget to replace the tiles, so they painted the tiles with white, epoxy paint. Really freshened up the room.

Classic designs from any era will always endure. That's probably why the apartment changed so little over the years.

It's a nice house, but very generic and predictable. It reminds me of staged houses in new construction developments.

Good point Jim G. If we really want to be green, we should first reduce and reuse before we recycle.

I know we all want to do the right thing when it comes to the environment, but most of the "green" products I see simply give us another excuse to consume more "stuff" we really don't need without feeling guilty about it.

I've had great photo book experiences at Shutterfly.com. I especially like the photo books with customizable covers. The photo books really bring your pictures to life, and the quality is amazing. I always make one after my vacation while it's still fresh in my mind. You can also share your book online with your friends.
