It's been said a few times, but I would invest in larger cabinets. Maybe not ones that go all the way to the ceiling, but close enough that there's only a small space between it and them? That way you still have that line of negative space, but the added storage. Or you could try putting up a creative piece of artwork (or creating one of your own?).

To the person who suggested the chalkboard paint- I'm a huge fan of it myself and think it's pretty cool, but I'd try and think about what the space is. Using it high above kitchen cabinets seems extremely inconvenient and would look a little odd with writing...
