Even within the US are food cravings...my PA Dutch dad can't get enough of the liverwurst I bring him when I visit him in Michigan, and my mom always asks for Tastycakes.

Wow, people get up in arms about this stuff.

We got married young, so the showers and wedding presents were enormously helpful because we had NOTHING. We also got lots of hand-me-down furniture (seriously, our first few months the only brand-new item we owned was our bed).

Also, I'm another with a handful of thank-you notes that never made it out!! I cringe every time I remember it. My husband and I worked together on them, and I guess we never gathered those last few addresses. Yikes.

It's so interesting reading everyone's comments and experiences! I was delightfully surprised when my husband and I got an apartment together to find that we have very similar tastes. It made choosing colors and furniture much easier!

@egbindc, I hate to be *that* person, but Bell's makes Oberon, not Founders. They're close geographically, though! =)

We just got a case of 3 Floyd's Gumballhead, and that's great--crisp and light with just enough hop and body to make it feel substantial. I'll always go for Victory's Summer Love, though!

Sugar snap peas are one of my all time favorite snacks, period! They're so hardy and easy and SO delicious! Plus I can eat a whole bag, get the delightful crunch of chips and none of the guilt. ;-)

Holy moly, I'm saving this recipe. I'm a novice liquor drinker (beer and wine for this gal, thanks) but I've recently discovered honey bourbon and it's the only liquor I can drink straight up. This looks like a delightful way to enjoy it all summer long!

Interesting--and the comments are even more so! My bedroom is a deep, chocolate brown with crisp white trim and blue accents, and I absolutely love it. It's been that way for over 4 years, and the only thing that affects my sleep quality (besides a snoring husband) is my own stress levels. The color just makes me happy and calm when I'm already awake.

@Battra92, that's hilarious.

I was told about #3 by my boss in high school (small catering company). I flip over my knife to scrape to this day, and tell everyone I can to do the same! I'm also lucky enough to have been gifted a pretty nice basic set of knives when I got married 4 years ago, so my knifes are still in good shape overall.

If I don't stock vanilla beans (scandalous, I know) could I use some vanilla extract or something?

@linznol--LOL! That's awesome.

I'm boring--I usually stick with the "where are you from/what do you do." I didn't realize it was so offensive to so many people...of course, I just assume that if I'm at a party where I really know that few other guests, I'll be repeating myself and playing a lot of "pleasant guest." When I'm with friends, or around just a handful of new people, I'm more open and outgoing. Depends a lot on the setting.

Been there! Our stove was unhooked for close to four weeks during a kitchen remodel. We did lots of crockpot--I like to roast whole chickens in mine, and then use the meat for a variety of meals. I also used the microwave a good bit, and we did lots of sandwiches. Also, I know cooking can be relaxing, but takeout can be good sometimes too.

I'm with Jane...pretty much everything I host is buffet style. I'll plate dessert sometime, especially if it's something + ice cream (toss that ice cream right back into the freezer), but our dinner parties are cheerfully awkward events, since there isn't really a space big enough in our apartment for a table with guests AND food. We even make our guests walk with their plates from the kitchen (where the buffet is) to the living room (where we set up a table that can accommodate more than 3 people). We're such low-class folks. ;-)

Great tips! I love dessert, and while the after-dinner moderation isn't a challenge, it's the next day when I come home from work absolutely starving. I always freeze about a third of anything I bake, and it helps manage our portions. I also try to choose to bake when I know friends are coming over, so there's less leftovers! Last, I use the same trick as youngfrey--I put my ice cream into coffee mugs or little ramekins, so it feels like a full portion when it's much less ice cream. yum, now I want something sweet...

This is hilarious to me, reading everyone's favorite chores! =)

I kind of like making the bed, doing dishes, and sweeping/vacuuming...mostly because those three little chores can make my whole apartment feel put together in about an hour total. I'm also a freak about keeping everything on a horizontal surface neatly stacked. Huge pile of mail or magazines? Fine by me, as long as it's neatly stacked.

I hate scrubbing the shower, but the boy does that...we switch off ironing because we both hate it. Everything else is pretty neutral, I guess!

I'm with eclectorama, I love a good chewy cookie and for those I sip my milk as I chew the cookies. For crunchy cookies though, I love to dunk, and there's nothing quite like those Ivan's ginger spice cookies dipped in hot tea.

@Brooklynnina, my husband is the same way. I freeze my chicken breasts by twos (enough for both of us to have dinner, and me to have lunch the next day) and I've found that I can thaw it in about 20 minutes flat by putting the ziploc baggy into a bowl of the hottest water my tap can produce. In that time I'll prep everything else (or check email) and dinner's on the table in less than an hour!

Somewhere along the way I became crazy about wonton soup when I'm sick. If I'm sick enough to stay home, there's very little chance that I'm cooking, so the takeout factor is nice. I guess it's the combination of hot broth, saltiness, and nice big bites of dumpling. Yum.

I lovelove leftovers. When I was a kid, my mom worked late closing the store she worked in, and sometimes if she had ordered out with her coworkers, I'd wake up to find a precious doggy-bag container in the fridge. I always nibbled, but if it was a monto cristo sandwich, I knew she'd saved it just for me.
