Oh my! I came across this company a few months ago after researching "pretty kitty" boxes online. My hall closet was fed up with being used as the feline lavatory. Plus I hated wasting the storage space. I went on their website to look into purchasing one of these oh-so-chic designs. When I saw the price plus shipping, I was surprised. As you can see, this is made of plywood. (which I love the look of) I decided then that I would make my own.

I went to home depot, and they have pre-cut sheets of plywood that are 3/4 inch or 1/4 inch. 24in x 24in. I bought a jigsaw-30.00, 1 inch wood screws - 7.00, wood glue-2.50, plywood - 4.50 per panel. I took it all home, sanded down the sides a little by hand to get rid of the splinters. I then attached 2 panels together at a 90 degree angle, butting the ends together. I pre-drilled the holes for the screws, then used a larger drill bit to make sure the screws would counter sink into the wood. I then used the wood glue down the edge to add strength. Holding the boards together, I then drilled in the screws. I repeated this all the way around until it was a square. Make sure you whipe of any glue that oozes out of the seam. It will stain the wood and make your finish look weird.

I did have some over hang but just sawed it off. I made the last panel on the cube removeable to serve as the door. I cut a 12 inch hole in that panel.(my cat is huge) The end result was a piece that fit snuggly into the opening that did not require hinges. I just pull it out when I need to chagne the litter.

I then filled the screw holes with wood putty and sanded it when dry. The last step was to stain it. I used a poly-stain combo from home depot in ebony-7.50. I just used a rag to put in on and whipe off. Two coats inside and out. The finished product is very close to the inspiriation and cost me 74.00. The cat used it right away and I use it as an end table. Fits in nice with my modern taste. My kitty is happy and so is my closet.

I know exacly what you are going through! I just started decorating my first place and it had the same ugly wood color on the fire place. I am renting so to paint it was out of the question. What i did was cover it with white contact paper. The reason I am mentioning this is that you could always test it out with contact paper since it is removable. If you like it, paint it, if not, you can leave as is. I know I always felt guily painting wood until recently. Give it try you might really like the look.

I think the red sofa could stay under on condition. You paint out the green with a gray tone. Take a look at this link. Gray and red look fabolous together in my opinion.

Use some solid white accessories like vases and sculptures. Use metalics to add some unexspected touches. Be careful of how much red accents you use. You want to make sure you use it around the room, but in smaller quanities since the couch is red. I.E. don't get a red rug, maybe a white and black or white shag (if you can keep it clean, I know I can't)

Since you are on a budget, get accesories at thrift stores. You will be AMAZED what you can find. Don't worry about their colors, you can always spray paint. Find some brass lamps, you know the ugly ones from the 80s. You can use an automotive creame to turn them silver and modern! I did it and it turnouted out great. Here is the link how:

The biggest thing is just to start. as you add pieces, you'll get a feel as what you like. Remember, things don't have to "Match" they just have to go together.
