Anyone wondering what that fireplace/chimney heat does to the flat screen and books?
I always wonder when I see people putting the flat screen above the fireplace. Have you put your hand on the wall there when a fire is going? Can get pretty hot...

I fell in love with my new apartment's claw foot, but after realising that the cast metal acts like a heat sink = the elusive dream that was never really a hot bath by the time you got in...and also struggling to clean the dirt from underneath, I had it removed. :-( Cute, but does not work.

In South Africa it is illegal to have any electrical fittings in a bathroom - water + electicity = bad news. That is why washers and dryers are in the kitchen in smaller houses/apartments as a rule.

Haha! Had EXACTLY the same in my apartment, I just ripped out everything and had a whole new bathroom installed. Still living with the white painted tile in the kitchen though. BTW, the bathroom tile was not vintage, they were standard cheapo porcelain, before anyone gets upset! :-)

A warm earthy beige, similar to the walls in these posts:

Exactly what I inherited with my apartment. Sand down cabinets to a smooth finish, repaint with a glossy white using a sponge roller. Paint walls a light grey or stone. Remove/glass doors top cabinet doors to open the space up.

I loved claw foot baths - until I got one. How do you clean under/behind, also, they tend to get cold veeery quickly. :-(

Ahh, I am not a crazy person! My neighbour insists on waking up in the wee early hours, and wake us up by banging cupboard doors so hard, my boyfriend jumped up convinced that someone was trying to break into my apartment.

Remember - don't just think where the mirror will hang, but also think of what you will see in the mirror once it hangs - mirror in the bedroom? Don't hang it where people in the hallway can see private spaces or laundry. I hung a mirror in my lounge to reflect trees through a window opposite it. that way you have the sense of lush greenery surrounding you from both sides, and it amplifies the light in the room, appearing to be a second window. You can also either hang a mirror eye height, so that people can see themselves in it, or you can hang it just higher than is comfortable for looking at yourself, so that you see ceiling. That way it is not distracting, but still enlarges the room.
