I once used Ikea's calculator to find out how much it would cost to outfit a similar bookcase wall in my living room, and in fact it costs about the same for a large space as having a carpenter custom-make built-in shelving. The doors and the high ceilings really make things add up, and billy is still basically shoddy material with those annoying little holes inside the cases. In my opinion, not really worth it...

What a lovely home! Lived in, put together, and without the interior design cliches so often seen on AT.. Great job!

Rustam, which sites do you use to find things? I look sometimes on Avito and Molotok, but 90 percent of stuff for sale is typical (awful) Russian furniture.
btw, I have a similar orange orb lamp, i love it. Lamps were much better quality back then.

hey, I saw these pics on the-village.ru, awesome that apartmenttherapy is branching out to Russia! Great look for a small place, I have to wonder though where the closets/storage is and what the bathroom looks like.

Hilarious!
What better way to mock the idea of thriftiness and healthy lifestyle of home canning jars than put up rows of fake ones? Come on Apartment Therapy, keep it real.

I tried this last year, and my lettuce all died due to the lack of sun. Although my windows face south, the glass still filters the ultraviolet light, and the greens don't get enough. if you have a patio if might work, but in my case putting the box outside would mean the lettuce will get all the street pollution, so I'll stick with plants that are not as sun-thirsty..

I'm from the Seattle area, and I too think the Japanese maple would look nice against the gray house - it's bright red. But many other plants, and check out this guide if you want to "go native": http://green.kingcounty.gov/gonative/

I love Snap Judgement - been liking it more than TAL lately. Tried to listen to TED Talks which is on the list, but I feel like without visual aid many of them are hard to understand. Also Intelligence Squared is great.

I love fresh flowers from the garden or wildflowers picked in the country, but don't like the industry polluting with fertilizers nd then flying the flowers thousands of miles away. So, only get seasonal blooms here in Moscow.

An interior decorator once told me that body temperature also depends on room color, i.e. if you tend to be cold (like me) it's better to decorate in warm colors. Can anyone testify to that? I like cool greens but maybe I'll get too cold around them? ))

funny how places that are described in the US as unusually small are actually the average living space for a family of three or even more in european cities...

i too have had a cheapo ikea one and think it's more practical as you can line dry sweaters on a simple flat rack but not a complicated one with small multiple tiers.

okay, i agree that it is cool looking, but the functionality of storing things like that seems doubtful. imagine you put something in the bottom suitcase of say, five. every time you would need to get it out would cause small trauma.
