This is the best house tour I've seen. I love absolutely everything. Very well appointed without anything looking too "precious".

Also, not sure if anyone mentioned, but I used to go to Costco with a friend and we made one separate purchase of the things we were splitting. Got the savings without the storage hassle.

I do and have a few storage practices that help:

With stuff like TP and paper towels, I look for opportunities to store them up high. I like to keep things out of sight and can always find some extra vertical space in a closet.

When I need to store things and don't have an obvious spot for them (which is pretty frequently as my decor is minimalist), I walk the loft and look for dead space. Not just dead space that can be used for the stuff I need to store but dead space that can be used for storing anything. I find that shifting items to a space that more closely matches their size means maximizing storage capacity. By moving things around, I can usually uncover an opportunity to stash whatever my new purchase is.

I buy things that can be easily removed from their packaging. This saves a lot of space. Breaking down my mondo TP package into individually wrapped rolls lets me place them in baskets, put a few under each sink, and tuck them into little pockets of space in closets. Every time I bring something into my home, I try to immediately dispose of as much of the packaging as possible.

I'd love the story of it enough to keep it...in the closet. Or maybe take a picture of it to keep as my screen-saver. I can be pretty sentimental, but I draw a line between keeping and displaying. I have some crazy sentimental stuff in my storage unit that will never see the light of day.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If it works for you, that's great. If you can add some matting and an interesting frame, all the better!

I'd consider what other colors you have in your apartment. It might be good to have a palette of colors that work well together (compliment, not match) as people frequently experience many rooms at once (with doors open, etc).

I'd also be wary of anything too peachy. I have used the color scheme design tool that Tffnynelson mentioned with great results (OK, it was for my website, but still...). I bet if you played around with it, you'd find something you really like.Like this.

Wall Color To Complement Bedding? Good Questions

Scott, I have a VERY similar layout and this is what I did on my jumbo wall:

Before: http://www.flickr.com/photos/whizbangsolutions/7257664814/in/photostream

After: http://www.flickr.com/photos/whizbangsolutions/7257664758/in/photostream/

(Don't mind the horrible light and overly minimalist furniture...it's been changed since I took these shots)

I found an artist I liked on Etsy and asked him if he could product something of a different scale for one of his works I liked. A couple of things that I considered:

1) A big white wall needs color. Especially if many of your furnishings are neutral (which both of ours are). That means pretty saturated color...no pastels or anything.
2) I know there is temptation to get something huge, but beware: if the viewer of the peice can't stand back from it significantly, then you shouldn't go too far up the wall. My ceilings are 16 feet tall and my room is about 18 feet deep, so I chose not to fill the space. Instead, I selected a piece that people will be able to take in without straining their necks. The artwork you see in my photo is 8 feet (plus a fw inches) wide x 4 feet tall.
3) I got the added benefit of supporting an individual artists. It wasn't too expensive (under $1K).
4) If anything changes in my decor, the work I selected is flexible...it's actually 4 panels. So I could use them individually or in groups elsewhere.

I'm happy to post more photos if it's helpful. Like I said, our floor plans are very similar and I've put a bunch of work into making it look great...hoping I feel worth of entering small/cool next year.

Good luck!

Ideas for Giant Wall in New Loft? Good Questions

Oooh, I wanna be judged by Apartment Therapy!

It's OK, I have issues. But if I did all that stuff before I went to bed, I'd never get to sleep. Too much light and activity. Just saying that if you have any issues with insomnia, do that stuff earlier in the evening.

I'm also one of those do-as-you-go dorks. And I consider myself fairly obsessive (like I said...issues), but taking the garbage out every day exceeds even my OCD needs. I've been known to leave a coffee cup or 2 in the sink...gives me something to do while the coffee is brewing in the morning and I am trying to remember my name.

1) Things aren't memories
2) Part of the fun of having nice things is finding them.

Computer and wallet aside, I would run out of here with...not.a.single.thing. I try do that whole non-attachment thing. Hmm, must be kinda working.

Nice mix of masculine and feminine so the girly touches don't look prissy. Exactly my style. Love-love-love.

All you folks who live in small towns and open your door to anyone would quickly change your tune if someone in your community were raped and/or murdered. Happened where I grew up. To think that it won't happen to you is naive and makes for a great quote to give the news reporters. I bet lots of victims thought that it could never happen to them.

And is it really that much of a tragedy to deprive a kid of sugar? It's sugar, for crying out loud! He doesn't NEED Kool-Aid.

Yeah, it's sad that this is how things are. But pretending otherwise is just not smart. We will open our doors to strangers because we want someone's kid to get their daily supply of sugar-water? Oy.

When Do You Open Your Front Door?

Gawker? Oh wait, it's Apartment Therapy.

Didn't most of us get to our own style by a system of trial and error; inheriting furniture from relatives, making furniture out of milk crates/cynder blocks/palettes/plywood, buying crap furniture, mixing stuff up, figuring out who we are and then investing in more and more good pieces? Then you can have a home that you can be proud of, that reflects your personality and that makes people go "wow!" for the right reasons. You still gotta do the work to have "style", even if you can afford a decorator. Just not feeling it here.

When you stage your house for sale, you are told to remove all "personal" objects like pictures so that the potential buyers can see themselves in your home. That is exactly what his place feels like. It makes me wonder if he enjoys showing his friends his home more than he enjoys living in it. And that makes me sad.

I like 1 and 5 and agree that the rest are too busy. There are too many lines going in different directions and the eye doesn't know where to go. I'd prefer highlighting a beautiful piece of part or furniture. But the moldings?

And I can't imagine how much work it takes to install.

This is the first time I have seen photos that made me sure that I would want to hang out with the owner. Tons of personality. Looks like it smells of old wood and greenery. Love-love-love it!

I have an industrial/modern loft and Tim's place is giving me great ideas!
