Absolutely beautiful. And as a fellow city dweller (NYC), I understand about staying in a rental space for an extended period. If you find rent stabilized in a good location--drop anchor! I think my favorite is the painting over the sofa in the living room.

I've been in my building about 1 1/2 years and know the couple across the hall, but that's about it. And it definitely helps that they have a (very cute) baby. Babies and dogs break the ice beautifully. My parents are friendly with their neighbors and know just about everyone in their surrounding area. Of course, they've lived in their house since 1971.

My first thought was also a chuch pew. My sister got one years ago off of eBay for their kitchen and it's worn like iron. It would be such an interesting look for that space.

BarbieQ-I was going to say the back of the door hooks, too. I have them on the side of all 3 of my closets and they are lifesavers for sure. I also "made" a desk out of 1/4" thick glass (48"x24") and some Ikea trestle legs. I have it right in front of the window and it serves as a desk and dining table.

Okay, now I'm definitely going to do a wall of drapes behind my bed to serve as a backdrop. Really well thought out design plan--nice job!

I really like the living room but must agree, the stairs are kind of awful.

Very nice! A great example of masculine design that is still very stylish. Did I recognize immediately some items? Yeah, but so what? They're popular for a reason. I think my favorite detail was the uplight through the glass shelves.

What a beautiful home! True to the architecture, appropriate for the people who live there and just plain great to look at. The lighting--OMG, the chandeliers! I just about died they are so fantastic.

For Brooklyn, I'd have to add the Meeker Ave. Flea Market, too. I'm constantly surprised at what good deals I see there.

Now THAT is some elbow grease! I'm so glad you figured out a way to use a natural product like vinegar instead of toxic chemicals to remove the flooring and grime. But jeez, you probably can't come within 10 feet of vinegar now!

I think choosing white (but cleanable) surfaces was a really smart choice. I also love the living room shades and the tall plant in the corner to add some height. I think the one thing that worries me is the bunk bed, even though I know space is at a premium. 4 seems a little young to be that high up.

The first 2 in particular are very impressive. I agree about the last one--I probably would have kept it as is but switched the hardware. Of course, that's easy to say not having seen it in person.

I think my favorite were the orange chairs. They're just the right size and I love the shot of color. Also, thank you for making your bed so tidily. =>

@AmyPureHome: are their pieces more custom? Some companies don't stock items and instead make them to order to keep overhead down-especially upholstery. 8-10 weeks for a customized sofa is actually pretty fair lead time.

I probably would not have made the same choice to close off the kitchen, but if art is more a priority than cooking, it was the right choice for the home owner. Too many great things going on to pick a favorite--a tie between the variety of great chairs, the chests and that bedspread (I made similar ones for my nephews a while back). And yes, there is a restaurant on RI--it's called "Restaurant". RI=Fisher Price village, which is part of why it's so great.

The easiest way to create cohesion is repetition. Using the same finishes or colors will help tie things together. For instance, if you do curtain panels on your windows, maybe add a fabric covered bulletin board in coordinating fabric over your desk? Is there a way to change the finish on the desk so it more closely relates to the dining table? Or to perhaps exchange either the desk or table for something completely different (glass on trestle legs--just as a random example)?

About 65% of Ethan Allen's stuff is made in the US. It's made in either Vermont or N. Carolina with wood from the US, too.
