We have a Shark that works great on carpet. When I had wood-only flooring, I had a little $15 electric broom that sucked up dog hair like a champ.

And please, bathe your dogs regularly.

We moved one like this a few hours away. I took the drawers out first, laid it in the back of an SUV on a towel (on its back), and put the drawers in the SUV separate.

We planted mine (not really a birth tree, but a seedling I rescued from a crack in the sidewalk at four years old, and kept in a pot for the next 6 years) in the front yard, so we could always come back and look at it. Over two decades later, it's doing great!!!

Why not switch out the worst of the light fixtures? As long as you have access to the breaker box, it's really not all that hard to do. You can find inexpensive fixtures pretty easily.

In DC, the first question is ALWAYS "what do you do?", followed by, "where are you from?"

I like to ask couples how they met - this is always interesting! Plus it usually leads to other fun things, like where they're from or what college they attended. I met my husband on match, so our own story generates interesting conversations!

My electric sander just saved me hours of work when I refinished my patio furniture and porch swing. Very good investment!

I'm a big fan of Rainwashed by Sherwin Williams, but you HAVE to try it in the room because it looks different in every light.

I used it in our half bath and our living room, http://bonnieprojects.blogspot.com/2013/02/half-bath-reveal.html

What Do You Look for in a Hometown?

We relandscaped our new house last fall. We had a lot of good plants, but they were in the wrong places, so just like furniture, we relocated them! Pretty much anything but trees can be moved, so don't feel like you're trapped with a certain placement.

I was shocked how expensive plants can be! I'm glad we could reuse so many plants, but we bought a few new ones, too.

We dug up all our grass and are doing a mix of trees, bushes, perennials, and annuals. I adore the perennials, because they're so maintenance-free and cheap in the long run. I leave space for annuals though, so I can change out plants with the season and get beautiful color. It's been awesome not having to mow grass. Instead, I take a few minutes on pretty days to pull a weed here and there and appreciate whatever plant is doing something new that week.

I left LOTS of room for things to grow up - planting some things too close to your house can be bad for your foundation.

The guys at the local nursery have been super helpful in helping discover and choose the right plants. I also pay attention to what seems to be thriving for my neighbors.

@Pi, I've also found CSAs to be pretty pricey in DC. I think if you have a large enough family to eat all the produce, and normally buy 100% organic, you'd more or less break even. I found that the $550 price tag wasn't worth it for me, and I do better buying what I need when I need it from grocery stores.
