We ran out of space for bookcases, and so put a three-shelf one in the kitchen in the corner, away from the stove and counters. It's handy to have more surface area in there, but mostly it was fun going through and pulling out all the books from our collection with food words in the title. :)

Gin and tonic has always been there for me. When I first started going to bars and would panic, not knowing any drinks to order, and blurt it out; to now, the old standby. You can go wrong, but can you really ever go wrong?

I got some nice blue buckets with cute white handles at Big lots for $1.50 each for herbs, and we're also trying tin cans on the fence, and some brightly colored plastic boxes and garbage cans (also from Big Lots) for different plants. So far so good! And way less than a quarter of the cost of regular planters.

I'm a big fan of the hand clap and "Well!" as you start to stand up, preferably after the perfect lull in conversation. But I don't think it's rude to start cleaning up; I think it's a good natural cue to start wrapping things up.

Wood paneling is appropriate if you have very large, very sunny windows that look out into the kind of woods where you might see, say, a wild bear. If not, I think it's best to just skip it.

I've had perfectly nice evenings tainted by arguing about football all night. On the other hand, I've had boys ask for my number after we'd argued about football all night, so, you know.... it depends.

We always had this family friend who, without fail, would clean the entire kitchen and all the dishes during any gathering, ever. My mom would always try to get her to stop and tease her saying that she was getting the place cleaner than it had been before the party, but she would always just do it anyway. My mom finally stopped bugging her about it when she realized that was how she would deal with nervous energy at a party, and that she liked contributing that way, and so eventually my mom would just let her go to town and head back into the other room!

It sort of bugs me that there's this idea that it's "wrong" or "sad" to eat with the tv on or reading or on the computer, especially if you're on your own. The way I see it, I have one thing that I enjoy, which is maybe catching a show I like or reading something I like, and another thing I enjoy, which is eating some food, and I think it's fine to combine them. Sure it changes when you're with other people, and sometimes it's nice to eat quietly with no distractions. But basically, if it wasn't enjoyable, I wouldn't be doing it.

My roommate and I also usually eat in front of the tv, and we enjoy it. Sometimes we eat at the table, but usually not. When I'm tempted to feel bad that we're not having "quality" meal time, I remember we spend so much time together there's nothing really new to catch up on - haha.
