Can you please tell us the name or contact info of the guy who did your portrait? I live in NYC and would love to have this done as a gift. Thanks!

The bedroom is probably my favorite part, I like the combination of color & pattern in there quite a bit. And I bet the whole place looks great at night! A new couch in the playroom might be nice though.

Ok.. I like the before. It looks rustic and serves a purpose. I guess I can't see past it's adult use. Could have been a very cool tool shed.

You guys are mean. Altho I do agree these residences are completely over the top and unnecessary.

Pretty awesome. This grad student has serious envy ;) I really dig all of it except.... one thing... I don't quite get the couch?

Do you really like photo #5? That room is a little scary imo.

I was also going to say absolutely never. But then.... that 3rd photo is rad! I guess it depends on your budget. If you don't mind changing your sofa out in 2 years, go for it. If you do, I 2nd the earlier suggestions to go neutral w pink accents.

grozack - that would have been helpful to mention in your post. decorating for a 24 year old is... extremely different than for a couple! or even an adult buyer.

Ok, in the first pic, the mantel should NOT be painted teal. what the? yuck. It should be white or the stained wood or marble, something other than the color of the walls. Why did they do that? Otherwise, I love this color but do have a hard time with it in homes. I'd prefer navy, or to wear a dress this color, perhaps earrings..

Having just been through this I admit it sounds tempting, but at the same time, depressing! The absolute last thing I want to do right now is have a party where all I do is talk about my ex and breaking up. ugh. Would rather just go out to dinner.

One of my absolute favorite places to shop in Brooklyn is Greenhouse on Atlantic Avenue (Cobble Hill) - which is eco friendly. It's not entirely inexpensive, but it's not over the top either. They sell new stuff and antiques. If nothing else it is awesome for inspiration. Also, for a modern apartment like this one, I think layering makes a dif. I usually prefer prewar but was surprised by how much I absolutely loved this take on modern bones featured on designsponge:

Lots of wine. Heh. I like to make a special meal for myself every once in a while. And I'll go the whole 9 yards with candlelight, a beautiful bottle of wine, nice dinner, etc. I enjoy it. I admit that sometimes, by the time I end up going to this much trouble, I think "I'm going to call so & so and invite them over!"

I think this is a great article, but funny, I don't think the image they use is an example of great lighting. Seems a little sterile to me.

I agree w some of the other posters, I would like to know why this project is being undertaken. It's a big gap in the story, esp since this project is so unique.

I like the idea of painting the brick too (white) and dark functional shutters. A lush green lawn and some roses or wisteria would do wonders. Plus a hanging light fixture in front and a new roof (slate or cedar?). Of course, this is all expensive. But if that's not an object...
