My sister just had a similar surgery last month.

For the first few days after surgery, her throat was pretty sore from the intubation, so she ate a lot of cold soft foods like yogurt, ice cream, and pudding. Later she moved onto soups (with pieces of veggies, because they were soft enough to not really require chewing) and mashed potatoes and other more traditional soft foods.

Many foot surgeries have taught me a lot about this one. Strategically placed barstools are a must. I'd recommend one by the sink and one by the stove. I scoot ingredients down the counter to get the from place to place. Similarly, by holding onto the counter you can hop from one to the other.

If your foot hurts hanging down, or gets swollen, prop it up on the counter. If you're worried about the dirt, just use a plastic bag or towel as a barrier.

You want activated charcoal, which absorbs odors like mad. It's the stuff that's in fish tank filters, which you can pick up for cheap at any pet store, and it's the right kind anyway because it's broken up into small bits for more surface area.

I saw this used on Iron Chef America once. The challenger chef had a sheet of pastrami flavoring and wrapped it around salmon, I think. Could have been something else though. Whatever it was, it certainly seemed to work within the hour-long time frame and got good reviews from the judges.

I have elfa shelving that is going to be put up next weekend. I live near a store, so I went there to get it. The staff was extremely helpful, and works with you one on one to figure out what you need. You just bring in the dimensions and they'll basically do the rest, and ensure that you leave the store with all the little pieces you need. It was a great experience, and this was during the height of their annual elfa sale, so they were swamped.

I've also been with my sister during their college night, when she was getting stuff for her dorm. It was a madhouse, I couldn't believe how many people were there. Even with all of that, you could always find staff to help you, they were handing out free water and snacks, and someone was quick to grab me a stool since I had a foot in a cast and all the standing around was getting to me.
