Wow! Loads of opinions about this I see. My worst nightmare is to trip over an open dishwasher and on to knives pointing up - so that one is a given at my house. I find the problem with sorting silverware as you put them in the dishwasher is that spoons and forks literally spoon, and don't get cleaned... Otherwise I keep the larger items at the edge and smaller in the middle of the bottom rack, and keep utensils lying in the top-rack. But I pretend not to be too picky...

My only velvet item is the turqoise seat in a 50s swivle chair in brown leather, which I think compliments each other.
Becuase of a false fire alarm I had to go into the apartment of the cat lady in my building, and what really sticks in my memory are dark red velvet drapes at both the windows and to cover a door opening. Paired with a shaggy carpet, an aquarium and at least three cats in a tiny apartment - I would say that that was TOO much velvet. But your furniture looks really neat in comparison though.

My bathroom door is probably 80 years old and I would have to get at custom made one to replace it, because it's quite a bit narrower then the modern standard. I've lived for five years with a 2005 white and gray tiled (even the celing is white tiles, which I love) bathroom, and an off-white old door with tons of paint layers from all those years and heavy wood trimmings. Last month I scraped off some paint layers and painted it a light gray with a touch of blue in it - it looks SO much crisp and clean than the old one!

I'm most annoyed about the steps and the railings. I think if they would paint them in a darker color, it could look a bit more thorough. Right now it really just look like they threw a can of pink paint at the whole housee and put the door and windows back.

Could you fit one of these wall mounted fireplaces there? http://www.pureflame.com/products/wall-mount/

Would be nice for dinner parties, maybe? Or else, I like all the landing strips suggestions, although I do see that you might not want that right next to the dining table.

There was a lot of news coverage about the emergency room being filled up with people removing the pits this way. They had all severe cuts on their palms. One of the doctors even admitted that she had hurt herself this way. So, even though I see how this is probably a very professional looking way to do this, it's probably safer to amateur it with a spoon or similar in my opinion. :)

My friend just got back from a shopping trip in Stockholm with a super-cute and simple ring with her Initial as a scrabble piece. As it is N and has the point 1 on it, it can also stand for Nr 1, so she is really happy with it, and I, a bit jealous

I also have the Stelton Thermos one that Sacher has. The stainless steel one was more pricy, but Oh so worth it! Best one I've ever had, and good looking as well

You might want to read up on Photosynthesis. I've always been told that green plants in the bedroom is not a good idea, because they use oxygen instead of Co2 when it is dark.

The Eva Solo one is worth it! My boyfriend got me one fore christmas, and it replaced my old IKEA one (like the one kjchordas recomended), and I have to say there is a world of difference! I would think you would have a hard time getting the magnet/rubber thing right with the DIY versions, although some of the tips here look promising!

I don't know the US price for this product, but where I live (Norway), it's about $45, which is a good investment for good knives.

Good luck!

I have to back up krista234 and all the others that mentioned Chopsticks! They are the best. A knife with your salad is not only impractical, but as no chef would cut up lettuce, why should you?

I have heard about the silver cleaning before, but never got all the ingredients right. I just tried it out on a silver jewlery case that had not been polished for 20 years, and it looks brand new. I also put my Alessi Aluminum juicer, which accidentally had a go in the dish washer some time back, and got all tarnished. This method actually worked on that too, and I have tried almost all the tricks in the book (Vinegar, baking soda paste you name it). So thanks! :)

I have a garlic card, which is good for when I want a lot of the jucies and less chunks. Other times I just press the clove flat and chop it. My card looks more like a credit card, but looks like they've given them an upgrade since I got that: http://www.garliccard.com/

How about giving it a modern touch by making the two sides glass and shutting the current opening? Then you will have a seetrough fireplace that you can enjoy from both sides of your room - a narrow version of this: http://designformenmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/faberfireplace.jpg It would be pricy, but more cos efficient than to change a fireplace that you will never use because of its location.
