I second decogirl on Isa Chandra Moskowitz & the PPK. The PPK recipe for mac & cheese is just fantastic, even though it sounds bizarre (cashews &, uh, sauerkraut...together at last?). Although this recipe for pasta with French lentils & lacinato kale is probably my all-time favorite: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Pasta-with-Lentils-and-Kale-238092. I like to make it with strozzapreti. It's divine with the toasted breadcrumbs (which actually make a pretty delicious substitute for parm in general, IMO). My deep dark secret is that I hate dark leafy greens - kale, collard, mustard, chard, even spinach. However, for dietary reasons, I'm supposed to eat them as much as possible. I've had great success with steaming them & then "hiding" them in one of two ways - simply tossed into whatever I'm cooking (since I'm a meal-in-one-bowl kind of girl, it's pretty easy; right now my leftovers include chili with spinach, curry with kale, & beans & rice with collards), or else used in a pesto (because everything tastes good with olive oil & walnuts). If you need to put a big heavy glass bowl on top of the refrigerator when that space is already occupied by another big heavy glass bowl, set the first bowl down. Do NOT try to pick up the latter bowl while also holding the former. Furthermore, should you fail to heed this advice & subsequently have a deep cut on your finger (caused by a heavy piece of jagged glass) that bleeds profusely for 45 minutes before petering out, do NOT then immediately proceed to paint walls for the next several hours, unless you would like a cut that bleeds profusely for eight hours. At which point you will probably decide that an emergency room visit might not be such a bad idea after all. Kitchen Accidents: What Lessons Have You Learned? |

I happen to hate the texture of greens, but love the nutritional value, so I'm constantly looking for ways to "hide" them in dishes. As such, I'm a big fan of this recipe for collard green olive pesto: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Collard-Green-Olive-Pesto-109229. Collard greens were on sale at my grocery store, so I actually made this (again) today. Two words of advice: (1) it can come out salty, so you might want to cut back on the added salt, depending on your olives, & (2) depending on your tastes, you might not need as much olive oil as called for. This sounds kind of gross, but it is actually quite delicious: seitan & spiced turnips over brown rice with Sriracha & a dollop of the herbed tofu dip y'all featured earlier in the week. So delicious, in fact, that I'm currently making a double batch of the turnips, only this time I"m going to try it with the tamarind quinoa from Isa Chandra Moskowitz's "Appetite for Reduction". Simple, but essential: soy sauce, tamari, &/or Bragg liquid aminos. One of these goes into almost everything I make, from vegetable stock to seitan. I also find tomato paste tremendously useful in a variety of food. To add a bit of complexity to dishes that are traditionally long-simmered with a meat like ham hocks (I'm lookin' at you, red beans & rice), I'll toss in a bit of liquid smoke at the end. I second beans & rice! So many beans; so many grains; so many possibilities. On Sunday I made a batch of traditional-ish red beans & rice using liquid smoke in lieu of ham hocks & seitan instead of sausage. Delicious. A Pot of Beans: 10 Tasty Ways to Cook Beans |

Chewy! But chewy is the way my cookie crumbles in general. This is my favorite recipe, although I confess that I so love these cookies I've never bothered to try another: http://www.gingerpeople.com/Worlds-Best-chewy-ginger-snaps Gingersnaps: Do You Like Them Soft or Snappy? | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn |

I painted my two closets hot pink with silver trim & I love them! I live in Portland, Oregon, so I find that the pop of hot pink is very welcome during the gray season. Also, it's a color that I love but would never use in large amounts or in a highly visible place - a closet-sized amount of it is perfect for me. Any clothing color distortion isn't a problem for me, because I tend to already have a pretty good idea of what the clothes look like when they're not against a hot pink background. YEAST BREAD. Pretty much the only thing I use my KitchenAid for, but it was worth every penny. Although the mixer does have a habit of making a run for the counter edge with certain types of dough. Apartment Therapy The Kitchen | Thursday Giveaway: SideSwipe Spatula Mixer Blades |
