I would liked to have seen it under the same lighting conditions to get a true comparison.

Just to add to the bathroom discussion guest bathrooms in the UK have baths in them too, normally that would be called a cloakroom or loo here.

I am genuinely shocked by all the reports here. Fortunately I have never had an experience like that and a quick poll of friends found they hadn't either. Different food laws maybe?

Wii Aquarium game. Several of ours (we have 8) love watching the goldfish and their shadows in a plain sand based tank. We actually have one 'tank' set up just for them with their favourite fish.

I love the place and the close ups, but agree about the lack of whole room photos and house plan.

All those different windows, wonderfully varied, great character throughout but I love the trompe l'oeil effect of candleholder colours in the fireplace. Simple and beautiful.

The smaller fluffier quilts are eiderdowns not duvets. I forgot to add that. LOL

Eiderdowns are not to be confused with duvets. The eiderdown was used on top of sheets and blankets in a fully made up bed (Victorian and way before), duvets are used as a stand alone bedding here in the UK and for us are a much more modern concept, really only coming in to very common use in the past 30 or so years.

I use earplugs. Small, cheap, neat and tidy. We have neighbour and siren noise, these have really helped.

Archersam - you and I are obviously from the same neck of the woods. Been there more times than I can count . The whole feel of the place of the first picture(Dungeness not just Derek Jarmans cottage) really changes with the weather. In the summer it is truly glorious but in the winter it can feel like the bleakest place on earth.

I was given something called a chillow a few years back It is spnge in a waterproof case that you add water to then squeeze most of it out and seal. It's enough to cool without chilling, great as a cushion during the day too. Don't know if you can get it state side but they principle seems simple enough and no damp/wetness to deal with.

Rip down and rebuild, hardly an imaginative solution. Does not feel very welcoming to me.

Here in Europe, especially the part I live in (UK) distances are far smaller than in the US. I live in very south eastern UK (Canterbury, Kent) so I can travel to northern France via the Channel Tunnel quicker than it is for us to drive to London. There are about 12 local towns in a 30 minute car trip range. The local produce thing is a growing trend for us here and getting easier to source and buy local produce. Though some of it is at premium prices. We are also lucky that supermarkets/ grocery stores here tend to be of good quality and there is a lot of choice (atleast 6 here in C/bury). We have national and local box schemes companies for organic and/or local veg. I have shopped in france quite a bit, and where the traditional shops remain they are fantastic BUT a village boulangerie (bread shop) near where we stay in Normandy has been lost in the past couple of years and this is becoming a growing trend in some areas of France, as it did here in the UK over the past few decades. Please don't think you miss out on the open market experiences, not all are great and not all the items are at the peak of freshness as we have discovered. I think the true 'Parisian' ethos is to shop wisely with in the resources, time and and your personal tastes. Make the best of what you have. :)

Also why do you need to water down dishwashing detergent? Don't you just squirt a tiny bit in sink full of hot water?

I did that at primary school (turps I think) when I was 6. Hiccupped all evening, never told my mum or a teacher. But I have to say the turps had been decanted into a small fizzy drinks bottle and a group of children where trying to get others to do it. I was a naive little one. But there is definitely a need to be cautious round small kids.

I am a 42yr mum myself now, so it ended fine for this child.

Alcoholic cider is the real wassail cup/mulled cider, but if you can get really good cloudy apple juice that's good too. Never put sugar in mine. Sliced orange and apple are usual garnish.

LOVE MULLED CIDER - but then I am from SE England and grew up surrounded by centuries old traditions. :)
