After my husband and I married, we bought my in-laws house-a small, old home on the edge of A2. We added on to it by purchasing the adjacent lot when it came up for sale. Our house is still small (1300 sq ft) but we have lots of space to garden, run around and host our pets with benefits (urban chickens).

This year we bought cherry trees and grapes to expand our gardening adventures. I would rather have land around me than a big house ANY day. I agree with everything that has been said above about the benefits. We probably will just pay off the house within 10-13 years, help our kids get started in their lives and travel after retirement. Life is good.

I agree with MonW. Rancid seasoning, fix by stripping (see above) and reseasoning.

I make spruce tip tea and spruce tip jelly in the spring which are delicious! I also make a non-alcoholic beer with fresh juniper berries. I'll have to try the spruce tips in the spring...

Why do we have to bash the woman. Just leave her & her messed up life alone. I'll bet if she weren't getting attention & a lot of cash from the attention of her muck ups, she'd stop having so many of muck ups cuz there'd be no money in it.

Hi, Jarret,
Great redo. I'd like to see where else you see the coffee table, just for fun.

Also, is there a link to the new coffee table that goes up/down so we can see? Very clever.

I got the Bali/Island influence! Woo hoo go me! A lovely transport from in NYC!. ;-)

That is the loveliest winter squash room I've ever seen! Even the curtains match the strings inside of the squash. I just LOVE it!

I second (or third--didn't keep track) the need for porcelain sink cleaning post. I will even use ALL 10 fricking steps if it gets it clean. Now THERE's a monster worthy of attention. This post does seem a bit over the top. (sorry!)

I cook with farro but have never tried the risotto method. I have always substituted the wine for water or broth & never had a problem.

I just bought a thick, cozy sweater (women's XL) to cover a 22 inch pillow form for the couch. I tuck in the turtle neck, invert the arms and fold them neatly inside the pillow and blanket stitch the top & bottom. The last one i got was a nordic weave-black & natural background. Looks great!

How inspiring! I am going to make these!

So much of this is similar to my friend's tutorial. She used different spices and no tomatoes. I imagine because of her regional differences (she is from Azerbijan--or maybe she 'American-zed' them?). She did not use fresh grape leaves, but bought jars of canned grape leaves from our local middle eastern store. I used to pick fresh grape leaves for my mother when I was a kid & they were always tougher than canned. Makes me wonder if we prepared them properly or picked the wrong size/wrong time of year, etc.

This is perfect for their purposes of photos for food prep--I love how functional it is, too! I can totally see the cringe-worthy aspects of photographing food from the 'before.'

Fascia boards scraped & some replaced. Then painting the house. I have been putting this off for years! I've even scrubbed the house in preparation of painting and then *something* more importantly distracting came up!

What Are You Putting off Repairing or Replacing in Your Home?

I love this! We live in an older home that has been opened up (kind of awkwardly, but with really good intention!). We have a wood burning stove in one corner of the living room, lots of doors, windows, awkward little spaces & multipurpose space. This has totally inspired me to find a different configuration of furniture in the space (and maybe some different furniture, too!).

Some day I'm going to do a study of nay-sayers who find difficulties & complaints instead of working things out or reading/processing more carefully-I find the diversity of comments here so interesting. There's got to be some interesting psychological importance in there somewhere! Thesis here I come! ;-)

I love avocado & will have to try it on toast. For some reason, my body is rebelling against animal proteins & fats but I can eat vegetables with fat (like avocado or olive oil) just fine.

My favorite food right now is farro. I bought a large bag of it through my buying club & love it! I add it to salads, soups and stews, serve it in place of brown rice, mix it with fava pesto & other fresh goodies I've been making. It's marvelous on a hot day when I don't feel like eating much because the protein and fiber carry me through.
