Before & After: From Grungy Garage to Handsome Home in Bordeaux

This home is to be lived in...so much more so than the perfectly staged San Francisco house featured on today's home page. The latter looks beautiful but I couldn't envision myself sitting down anywhere with a pile of books, a bowl of popcorn, a cool drink and a bunch of friends...well maybe in that cute black and white striped bathroom :)

This house on the other hand is made for you, me and all our friends.

It's a cheery place.

And it's a happy place.

Malls!!! Rats!!!!

I live in Empress, Alberta. Population 138.
We don't have rats....not a single one.
We have rattlesnakes.
I seldom see one because I don't go looking but I expect some twelve year old boy could find a specimen in less than ten minutes if asked.

As for malls....on a cold Sunday evening evening last winter, a newcomer came into my shop quite distraught. His furnace had quit, he'd identified the malfunctioning part, but it was seven o'clock and the closest furnace store wouldn't open for another 13 hours. He wanted to borrow an electric heater to prevent the pipes from freezing.

My husband suggested that they go to the mall instead. The newcomer tritely explained that the city was two hours away and it was Sunday and everything was closed at that time of night anyway.

:Not that Mall", said my husband. "The Empress Mall!"

Then he got a couple of flash lights from the drawer, a screwdriver and a thermos of coffee and took our new neighbour to the Empress Dump....affectionately known in times of crisis as The Mall.

Of course they found the EXACT part they needed for the thirty year old furnace and had it installed within the hour.

I own/operate one of the funky stores you city folk like to visit. It used to be a bank so I have my very own working vault. My husband had to drill through two feet of reinforced concrete that was sided with 1/2" steel on both sides to install the plumbing for our new public washroom. I'm about to advertise that the bank in Empress once again takes deposits...but I don't do withdrawals.

It's a beautiful space. Love it. But what's with the big black boots? I live in farm/cow country and folks...even the farmers don't put on boots like that unless there is serious rainfall. In NY! Too much.

I own a gift store and can think of dozens of ways I could use this product. Naturally it isn't a solution for all shipping problems...but it wasn't meant to be. Those of use who need to quickly package small variably shaped items on a regular basis would find the product much more effective than keeping a variety of boxes in the back room that may or may not be needed sometime in the distant future and at present are just taking up shelf space.

As president of our local historical society, I've had considerable experience dealing with mold in various buildings we've restored. There are hundreds of types of molds...many are very, very dangerous...and it takes an expert to make the identification. Google "mold inspection" in your area, then take samples to them.

Yes...you will be moving the mold spores into your next home. If it is a drier climate that may...or may not...be an issue depending on how deadly the type of mold. Porous surfaces (like wood, leather and fabric) can be most problematic and if they were my belongings I'd call in the professionals ASAP.

I have dealt with various mold inspection and removal companies and all have emphasized that bleach, tsp, vinegar do not kill the spores, although they do a good job of cleaning off the surface.

Please go to the trouble to have various samples identified because several types of mold can cause brain damage and/or kill and children are particularly vulnerable. As to cost...I recently took in three samples for testing and paid $125 for the report. It would have been $80 but I wanted same day service so was willing to pay extra.

Actually they're not expensive...if you go to the Wasara website the products can be purchased in bulk at a reasonable price. I don't think they're made to be used by you and me on a daily basis, but rather for special occassions..parties or perhaps by caterers, for example. I hadn't known about the product but am placing a bulk order for their cute disposable cold drink containers (with lids) and possibly their coffee cups as well as a package of plates. I own a small gallery/restaurant and the cold drink containers will add to the atmosphere when I serve fresh lemonade or bubble tea to my "take out" customers. I would LOVE to win this contest so I can test drive the product.
