I use Buckwheat hull mulch. Not only are the hulls a byproduct from the food industry, but they're also not dangerous to animals, and look really nice. I've used them short term with garden vegetables, and long term with a raspberry bush, and in both conditions they hold up well, and keep the moisture in the soil.

I'm not a fan of mulching everywhere, but in small areas, I think the buckwheat works great.

The most I'd ever have would be a birdbath.

That being said, some of my old neighbors used to have a contest to see who could get the most ridiculous lawn ornamentation (I'm talking about stags, turkeys, geese, gnomes, etc). It was very fun to watch. While definitely not my style, it was entertaining and interesting to see.

I LOVE this! I adore plants, and with the pristine white walls and cabinets, it looks amazing!

As for the kitchen being a sterile enviornment, that's absolute bull. The kitchen is actually one of the most unclean places in the house, microbe wise. And since plant diseases aren't transfered to humans, the idea that ivy could somehow infect your or your food with something is ridiculous.

Aw! What a sweet story! I once had a hamster that fell down our heating duct. Thankfully it was summer, so the heat wasn't on! She was fine, but her fur, which had been white, ended up grey.

Kudos to you for trying to find a humane solution to your problem. Too often people will take unnecessarily extreme measures on an animal because it's more convenient.

I've never had problems with squirrels before, but I'll keep this tip in mind if I do!

I wouldn't bother with a cat run for my indoor cats, but I also have three cats that do go outdoors. I think a large scale cat run would be perfect for them. They could enjoy the outdoors without being in danger from cars and coyotes.

I adore the smell too!

But just a warning, tomato leaves are poisonous (they're related to the belladonna plant, which is colloquially known as Deadly Nightshade), so be careful with them if you have pets or small children.

I'm not bothered by it. I can't say I'd like it in my home, but in a way it is beautiful, kind of like appreciating a beautiful nude portrait. I'd prefer if it were a portrait, but what can you do.

And yeah, that last picture is HILARIOUS!

I adore the table too! While the chair and lamp aren't my style, I appreciate them as works of art. I think the thing that a lot of people here are misunderstanding is that I don't think these are meant to be fully functional pieces of furniture, but rather as pieces of sculptural modern art.

I'm of the mind that if you paid for a property, you should have the right to do whatever you want to decorate it. I can also, of course, understand the other side, how stuff like this can devalue neighbor's property. But honestly, it's really something that ties directly to the first amendment. Censoring the David's (and the like) might seem like a small thing, but it just might be the first in a long line of judgements that take away our freedoms.

(Sorry for the rant, I feel very passionately about stuff like this!)

As for the house, I can't say I'd love to wake up to it every morning, but it does have a sort of eccentric charm. And honestly, kudos to the man for not backing down on his decorating choices.

I've wanted to be a beekeeper for a long time! I adore bees! But I'm one of those people (Like Ed!) that tries to do a little bit of everything. I also want to raise chickens and goats (for eggs, and goat milk repectively).

All these stories are making me tear up! I'm not going to go into much depth about my dead pets (it'll probably make me cry), but most of my pets have been buried in a nice little shady spot in our yard. I refuse to flush fish, as I personally feel it's degrading to the animal. I'm big on burial, and will bury the small animals my cats catch.

Recently I've been having my pets privately cremated. I keep two of my cats in beautiful little urns on my bookshelf, and while some people might think it morbid, they remind me of the happy times I had with my cats. When I die, I plan on having my pets ashes cremated with me.

Kinda random, but what cute cats! That black and white one looks especially adorable and curious! As for cat litter robots, they're nice, but I think I'll stick to the old fashion kind. It might be a hassel to scoop, but it only costs a couple of dollars, compared to what the electric ones cost!

I could definitely get behind it if the hooks were removed. As is, it kinda reminds me of some weird torture device.

Suburban Sounds!

- My cats chirping and purring at me
- My hamster scurrying around in his cage
- Wind chimes on a warm breezy night
- Rain and thunder on the roof
- Heavy wind rustling the trees outside
- A train whistle in the middle of the night
- My air conditioning
- My greatly used beloved white noise machine! Nothing better!

Hehehe! My parents had the EXACT same mugs (the white correll with the green flower edge) when I was growing up. Unfortunately they (along with most of the rest of the set) was destroyed long ago. Do they still make that pattern?

My least favorite chores are; laundry and vacuuming. I'm kinda a neat freak, and I love to clean and organize things. But I absolutely abhor putting away clean laundry. Vacuuming is nearly as bad!

I'm wholeheartedly against taxidermy, but more because I'm an animal activist than anything. To me it's not any worse than the dead bugs people display sometimes, or even eating meat.

Stylistically, I don't care for the look of it (even the faux ones). It reminds me too much of old musty ski or hunting lodges.

I love teal and green together, especially in bathrooms. Reminds me of the sea. But I really don't like that bedroom. Too many patterns... Totally in agreement with the Lincoln bedroom... or maybe even a bit like Versailles.
