To jumpstart the change, take off the little magnets and doodads on your fridge. See if leaving the refrigerator surface bare improves the space for you.

Or replace all the small stuff on the fridge with one or two large "art" pieces.

If I weren't allowed to paint these walls, the urge to paint them a radically different color would be mighty powerful. I'd be all "Do. Not. Want. muddy creamsicle walls.

If I were allowed to paint, then I'd think "What a sublime pumpkiny-cafe-au-lait color. Lucky me."

I think the color can work. That band of reddish wood along the loft floor is a nice complement. It brings out some flattering tones in the paint. I'd head in that direction.

Also, using very pale woods like maple might make for a very serene, earthy yet light space.

Why is the feng shui bad? (A sincere question - not rhetorical.)

Is it because the layout isn't a square, so there are vacuums in certain quadrants?

IMO, feng shui has a lot to do with personal intuition rather than objective rules. If Kev wants to look into it, he can just pretend that the bathroom and the kitchen are "outside" the home. I think that's how homes were constructed traditionally. He can think of his main living/sleeping area as the house.

Technically, having a toilet inside the home is about the worst feng shui possible. Yet, somehow, civilization presses on - for good or bad - despite indoor plumbing.

I hope Marie shares details of what's going on.

If it's loud clanging in the walls, it might be just the pipes.

If it's the semi-transparent figure of an old man hovering a foot above the ground offering to fold the laundry, then it's probably a ghost.

(p.s. Don't let him touch your laundry, Marie. Ectoplasm is impossible to wash out of natural fibers.)

I kid ... but I'm open-minded and sincere in my request for descriptions of what's going on.

Cyndiu,

If you replace the clothing rod in the back of your closet with an Elfa rod, it'll hang at a much lower height than the current 60 inches. Elfa rods must be suspended below one of their shelves; that eats up several inches. Since your back wall is only 55" high, your rod might end up less than four feet off the ground. Might be too low for coats and some dresses. I love Elfa, but it's something to consider.

If the clothing rod hangs toward the back of the closet, and you're hanging stuff along the full length of the rod, then the available surface on each of the side walls would be only about 15 inches wide. You could probably install a 12" wide Elfa system on each wall.

But if you don't think the expense is worth it, you could hang hooks into a stud in each of the side walls and use hanging shoe storage. If your closet has a door, then there's also over-the-door shoe storage. Underneath the clothing rod, you could have a neat line of standing shoe racks. stacksandstacks.com has a lot of options.

I just discovered having an expanse of bare, uncluttered floor in the closet is the most mentally refreshing thing ever. Just getting all your shoes organized and off the floor will probably feel great.

Cyndiu,

How deep is the closet? And how wide is that 55" tall back wall? Are the corners of the closet floor right angles?

I scoped out the Muji UK site, and my weight-question was answered there. Limit for the aluminum coffee table is 30 kg. That's just over 66 lbs.

I just got the MUJI aluminum coffee table.

http://www.momastore.org/museum/moma/ProductDisplay_Aluminum%20Coffee%20Table%20false_10451_10001_34391_-1_11627_11455_null_shop_

I'd hoped to use it to support a 32-inch flat screen TV, but it seems a little flimsy. The sales clerk at MOMA told me that a lot of customers use them as media stands and that she's never heard of them having problems. But now I'm having doubts.

Anyone have experience with this table as a TV stand?

I urge everyone to revisit the original entry to get the full picture of how impressive this place is.

The first sideshow does a better job of showcasing this place. Although, I love the outdoor photos in the finalist entry.

I've done the bundle wrapping. It works really well in terms of fitting a lot more stuff into your suitcase. But it's a pain to dig for that shirt in the middle of the bundle, and then have to reconstruct the bundle.

I guess it would work better if you're only heading to one destination and you could unpack your stuff and hang it up.

When I tried it, I was jumping from town to town, spending only a night or two at each place.

Wow. This place is terrific. Nicely planned and a lot of fun.

Is your place really only 200 square feet - including the loft sleeping area & closet? Not doubting your word ... just making sure I'm understanding the situation correctly.

It's their party space; their prerogative to trick it out according to their fantasies. I don't know ... it's not beautiful. Maybe they weren't aiming for that.

The color choices are a little tacky. I love orange, just not here. And the aqua is gross. Maybe they should've executed their all-white vision to the end. Or, wherever there's red-orange, they could've used natural (unstained) wood to bring the contrast in materials and feel. Brought a touch of soulfulness to the space.

... or put paper behind the screen and hang it up on the wall.

That's my bias talking ... I'm not a fan of screens serving no function just taking up floor space.

Try changing the shades on your floor lamps. I'd look for a shade colored amber, yellow, or orange. Right now, the dark brown might be putting too much emphasis on the dark wood furniture.

Take the screen out of the corner and hang it up horizontally on the wall opposite your media center. You can weave fabric through the slats or hang fabric behind it - something that complements the colors in your rug.
