I have a similar situation -- large, exposed 1st floor bedroom windows -- and I also didn't want to block the light. I bought a ton of super cheap Ikea sheers and bunched them together. It actually provides sufficient privacy but still lets in a lot of light and it looks nice and airy, not heavy. You can sort of see how it looks here:

Go for it -- I just hung a sorta-similar light in my bedroom and I love it! It's only been up a few weeks and I've already gotten tons of compliments.

It's not super-bright, but I have plenty of other light sources in the room, so that's not an issue.

Oh my, I have those cabinets too. I am getting ready to paint them in Benjamin Moore Mascarpone with Guilford Green on the walls and I'm replacing all the gold hardware with oil-rubbed bronze. I can't wait! I tried a lot of different options to make the cabinets something I could live with, but in the end it just wasn't the look I wanted. Is there no compromise your husband would accept? Even a slightly darker walnut stain would make a huge difference!

I think it looks amazing! I'd love to know the paint color you used on the cabinets. I also have white appliances and it's tough to find a white paint that coordinates with them.
