I agree with most of the comments. However changing the orientation of the stairs and adding decorative columns could be costly but if you can swing it great! Apartment Therapy Chicago | Good Questions: Make this Look Like a Main Entrance? |

First thing I would recommend is to change the curtain to one with some color and/or pattern. I would also put up one or two large (or cluster) framed artwork by the chair and sofa. It doesn't have to be expensive and could be a large framed poster of something that inspires you. Next I would clear the clutter off the top of the book shelf and add a few items like a vase with (real) flowers, candle stick holders, etc. think in proportions and rule of three. A large, decorative mirror, above the book case would create a nice focal point for the room and enlarge the space. Next add a variety of patterned, decorative pillows to the sofa to break up the black sofa. If you still think it needs something, then I would say painting the wall behind the sofa a cool color if your accent pieces are warm or vice versa. Hope this helps and hope you'll show us what it looks like when you're done. Apartment Therapy New York | Good Questions: How Can I Make This Room Inspiring? |

I have a similar red sofa, rug and a black barcelona chair and the look is awesome. Any of the Eames chairs would look great too! As for a media center with some storage, I would recommend a credenza or sideboard. This will keep your tv at eye level for maximum viewing pleasure and provide storage for all the other boxes and some books. There are so many options for this that you'll have to look around and see what you like. You can go the expensive route from somewhere like Room and Board or go on the cheap at somewhere like Ikea. I think it's generic and bland. This is what happens when you buy all your furnishings from the same place. Apartment Therapy Chicago | A Modern Mountain Retreat by Room Board |

Worst mess ever for me was waxing my ski's for the fresh powder in the mountains. All I had to clean up all the wax shavings was a wimpy hand vac. A nice cool blue vac like this would really help get the remaining shavings embedded in the carpet. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | LA Thursday Giveaway: Eureka envirovac |

You can add a free-standing shelf as stated above or you could also move the sofa so that the back faces the kitchen and then add a shelf or a narrow table behind the sofa so that you are not looking at the back of the sofa. I would suggest using some colorful accent pieces such as a low profile ceramic fruit bowl in red (blue or green would work too) to replace the tall wire mesh one. Also throw in a long narrow rug on the kitchen floor. If you really want to paint something try the door, this will help draw you into the kitchen. A back splash could be nice but you might want to try some under cabinet lighting. Apartment Therapy New York | NY Good Questions: Ideas on Kitchen Cabinet Color? |

There is a book by Winifred Gallagher called "House Thinking" that discusses this topic at length. In it she brings up an idea about how we should really rethink the way we use the space in our home. One example is someone who desires a large kitchen with all the latest and professional appliances but rarely cooks. No one can say that desiring this is a bad thing but it certainly is an inefficient use of space if you don't use it. I think we convince ourselves that we should have all this space in order to be in the same status class as our neighbors but we don't give much thought to how we actually live. If a family is continually utilizing 2500 sq ft of space then that is a optimal use of space. However, if the same family is only utilizing a fraction of it then it's clearly not. I like HG for bedding, bath and kitchen stuff mostly. I don't like their selection of furniture because it's not my taste. Although, I have boughten a great mosaic bistro set that is perfect for outdoors. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | HomeGoods: LA Bargain Shopping |
