In London, we stayed in a posh, comfortable Kensington apartment owned and managed by London Perfect. I recommend them highly. They have Paris apartments as well. Apartment accommodations allow you to make your own breakfast in your own pajamas, explore the local markets, and explore your destination without having to worry about clearing out for a daily visit from housekeeping.

Why I Rent Apartments When I Travel

We love our "breakfast bar" even if we never breakfast on it. That's where our guests sit to drink wine and nibble on appetizers while I am cooking them dinner. But we tend not to use them for our own meals because it's boring to dine facing the kitchen (and the dirty dishes).

However it is a clutter magnet so I am a shrew about forbidding accretions of mail, reading matter, shopping bags &c.

Here in chilly Minnesota, people do indeed bring slippers to parties at people's homes -- I bring Halflinger boiled wool clog-style slippers for casual evenings or black velvet slip-ons for dressier occasions. (I've always assumed this practice derives from the prevalence of Scandinavians in this part of the world.)

Love this post and its subject! Allow me to add another thumbs up, belatedly, for The Pleasures of Cooking for One. Don't pass it up if you're cooking for two -- the recipes are easily doubled and the yields, as is, are quite generous.

I love blue and yellow but they aren't easy to harmonize with our exposed blond brick. That top photo, with its grayed, slate blue and brown-y, straw yellow, would be perfect. If only there were a keyboard command to click the photo contents--paint, rug, floors, furnishings, and all--straight into my living room.

This tea cozy is a fun weekend project (I've made several for friends) and it keeps the pot very warm, even when sub-zero morning temps creep through my drafty, windows.

@teeze and @potpie: The kinda-sorta-mitered corners on the penny tile strips don't look bad to my eye but your comments have piqued my curiosity--what would best practices be in this instance? How would someone who knows better make these 90° angle transitions work?

More favorite holiday movie recommendations from our house: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang (Hollywood holiday noir with Robert Downey Jr) and The Lion in Winter (12th century dysfunctional royal family Christmas with Katherine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole).

Our accommodations are fairly humble: an Aerobed on the floor of my office. So I provide a basket of travel toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, toothpaste, toothbrush) and an inexpensive, one-size-fits-most cotton bathrobe so that my guests can dash to the bathroom without worrying about flashing their hosts.

Larger buildings and associations have their drawbacks as well. In our 40-unit building, it took more than 3 years to get a necessary tuckpointing project underway because the resident/owners who didn't want to pay the special assessment kept digging up dirt on every contractor who submitted a bid. Unfortunately, the bids got higher and higher with each passing year and, ultimately, we paid a lot more than we had to.

Amy and vonlet24, I'm right with you on the side of big dogs in urban apartments. In our building, all the big dogs (including our retired racing greyhound) are mellow, friendly and quiet. It's not that all of the little dogs are trouble--but all the barkers and biters just happen to be small.
