I would go put up Elfa solid shelving from the Container Store. Come in lots of depths and you can custom plan them. Plus, crazy easy to install.

Also, Container Store just started their annual travel sale. Check it out for some awesome packing tips and products. I travel with enough room in my carry-on for a weeks worth of sightseeing thanks to the eagle creek pack-it cubes AND have enough room for board games. Cause sometimes you need to travel with good old fashioned board games.

So I am about to go on a trip with a camera and lens for the first time. I'm a pro at laptop and toilteries screenings, but with the camera I am a little clueless. What is the easiest way to make it through TSA with one? Do I need to take it all out like my laptop, or can I simply open the top of the bag up wide so the camera bag contents are clearly visible. I'll be flying through OHare on a NATO day and don't want any added stress...

With trophies that are the plastic and marble kind, the placard with your achievement or name is usually on with doublestick tape - I took a picture of each of my trophies, then pried off the placard and added those to a shadow box. Then I took the rest of the trophy to a trophy store, which most of them will help you recycle though. So not a lot of waste when you are done.
As to display, I always intended the shadow box to be up on the wall with my college degree. Nah. Both are just in a box under a chair, never really had a place to display them.

@hinmelb - OMG I want a water wall! I grew up in TX, and with so many droughts the thought of a water wall blows my mind. Love it. We always wanted to play in the rain.

My in-laws did a similar blow up - they took hi-res digital photos to office depot and asked them to be blown up into "architectural prints". These are b&w 24"x36" posters on a thin paper that they then spray adhesives to pink insulating sheets from home depot (that they spray painted black). Not the most time tested method, but it means each print only cost about $5.

I read that as "fridge soap" and "fridge soup" isn't any less gross sounding... Really awesome list though, gonna have to post on my fridge so I remember to do some cleaning next time I'm on the phone. I'm a big pacer while talking, and this is so much more productive.

I have an open shelving unit with some closet rods on it- one rod has all of my husband's audio cables, and the other has all my fabric on pants hangers. But only those over a yard. If it is less, a girlfriend suggested cutting foam core to the size of a large hardback and wrapping those smaller pieces around it and then stacked on a shelf. Remnants are the only thing in a bin. That way I know at a glance the kinds of projects a fabric is capable of and I find I use them more (and impulse buy less) when I am constantly reminded of the beautiful fabrics I already own. Oh, and nothing can be hung up until it is sewing ready, ie washed and pressed. Makes the impulse to create a lot easier because you can dive right into cutting and sewing.

Oh I love this idea! I can snooze for hours. And a playlist would really spare my husband from hearing the snooze alarm over, and over and over...

@paticleman - you can easily clean the shower curtain liner rather than buying a new one all the time. You can soak it in a hot tub for 30 minutes with some bleach, and agitate it a couple of times and things come right off without any elbow grease. You can also wash it in your washing maching with a towel or two, and again, everything comes clean without any elbow grease. Just kinda hate the thought of good plastic going in the landfill before it's time...

It would be super easy to install a railing on the wall side and still keep the floating look. WOW on the makeover, the wood stairs look amazing with the floors and white paint, really really nice job!

My dorm room essentials (& I work at container store) are things like command strips, non-ugly laundry bins, and things that do double duty, like decorative folding boxes (similar to the ones above). And I love the idea of the magazine holders to keep your school work organized but hidden. I always suggest to people to get to container store for the organization, and Target for the fun stuff. Target has really stepped up their back-to-school/first apartment game.

I whole-heartedly agree with the plea for an angie's list for renters. A few apartments ago, the landlord kept showing our place unannounced and we let the prospective tenants in even though it was an inconvenience, just so we could let them in on how bad the landlord was, how awful the neighbors were, and how broken half the place was. It took a long time to get that place re-rented, and we are glad for our hand in that.

I rent and cannot live without my library, hence the library/dining room. Bookcases line every wall, and the not too often used for eating dining table does double duty when reading passages from multiple books. my favorite armchair also fits in the corner so there are seating options. Libraries are always a possibility, you just have to make the room.

Container Store sells a trio of the novus cleaning/polishing cleaners someone above mentioned. $9.99. It's what most retail stores use to keep acrylic shelving clean and scratch free - I think the stuff is amazing and I use it on an acrylic catch-all tray I have. I definitely recommend it for cleaning and buffing scratches away.
