Any "ALL black-and-white" room can look too monotonous and simply boring, but your clever use of blue tones here and there (back of bookcase, cushions, trim on bedding) gives the space a sense of life beyond black and white. I think the hot pink dog also adds essential personality here. Without the hits of blue and pink – I think the space would be much too bland.
Well done!

A collection of second-hand sinks...love it.

I tend to do the same – unable to resist a stylish vintage lamp – also have way too many in the furnace room.

"...the story of the thing is actually more important than the thing itself."

Nicely said! If you really did lose your objects in a fire, the story behind the objects still exists and even more so now that you have photographed your decor for AT.
I use the same rule of thumb for artwork my daughters create in school...I take a photo of the art and then throw most of the pieces out.

I don't think I saw a description of the Palm Springs butterfly roof house framed sketch – is this a sketch by the architect himself??

Great tour, thanks!

Decor inspirations is what I come to AT for and there is more then enough in this house tour (or should I say 2 house tours) to keep me inspired for a very long time.

Judging and/or giving someone a hard time over the use of a single word is harsh and just inappropriate within this platform. Remember why we are here... and focus on the pleasure of seeing inside such an amazing pair of houses located in one of the most sought-after locations.

I have been living in a century home for over 3 years now and I find myself gradually getting more and more frustrated with the creaky stairs, cracks in the doors, wobbly handles, bowed windows, and on and on and on...

But I need to remind myself that I chose this home for the beauty of all its "antique oldness".

Your final quote is perfect;
"Especially with older homes, find the perfection in imperfections."
That is going to be my new motto!

Thanks.

I think much of this house tour is very "Apartment Therapy". The light blue bedroom with floral bedspread screams Apartment Therapy in every way.

There are many pieces I find intriguing. I love the feather/coral chandelier in the living room. It is a crucial piece in the room, adding a hint of Hollywood to make sure the space is not overly "Cape Cod".

The modern teal blue vases on the asian red console are stunning.

I also like the cut-out detail on the side of the outdoor white harvest table.

Though I live in Toronto, I have been to Venice Beach twice and loved to walk the streets around the canals. What I remember most from the area is the eclectic mix of house styles. It is impossible to find two houses alike.

I appreciate the understated decor of this space. It could have been so much more flamboyant and over-the-top, but I think restraint was used. The best feature being the canal itself, is not over-powered.

Thank you for a glimpse into my favourite area in California!

CANDLES... not something I normally admire in a home, but they work so beautifully throughout and work harmoniously with your mix of modern/eclectic style. I counted some 30ish candles in your home, but somehow I think there must be more hiding in places we do not see in this tour. I actually think your space would not have the same aura without them. I definitely have an urge to dig out some candles out of the back of my cupboards and give them another try.

I am going to steal your idea of stringing the little round outdoor lights across my yard/grassed area. Your outdoor space must look magical lit up at night!

Thanks for sharing!

You just don't find Spanish-style-stucco-20s-charm architecture here in Toronto, Canada! You are sooo lucky to have such an abundant selection in California.

Lovely colours throughout your home. I think it is the use of sunshine bright yellow throughout the house - so refreshing!

My fave is hardly visible; the red stairs. What a great idea to add a shock of colour next to the grey room. Paint looks chipped and worn, but no matter, the red still works!

Very inspired by this home... makes me want to get out a paintbrush and create some modern art!!

Simple ceiling light in the hallway - but such a pretty pattern on the ceiling - lovely.
