Jeff Shelton has a great design that's similar, called "Leaf Zag", and the tile is colored concrete, so it's less expensive than the other choices listed, and a LOT cheaper to install, since they are square tiles. I wish I could post a photo of a kitchen that this tile was recently used for, it looks fantastic!

My favorite special wine: Fizz by Municipal Winemakers! It's sparking Shiraz, so unusual and so good!

It's so great that you featured this place! They also have another hotel, the Agave Inn, right up the street. AND a really wonderful gift shop at the check in counter in the Presidio. These guys are really involved with the art community, and they will occasionally host fundraisers and art openings in the motel parking lot. Really cool!

You left out Holmegaard! Beautiful glasses. Heath Ceramics sells them, and a couple of them are even on sale right now. The more classic shapes, are not on sale, of course.

How about Farm City by Novella Carpenter? A very holistic approach to food: raise it yourself! And I heard Anthony Bourdain's new book is a good read...I think it's called "Medium Raw"...

My boyfriend makes dog toys from these! Just use a tennis ball as the core! It's not super easy to make a money's fist, though...not a beginner's knot.

I make a beet green and chard salad by finely chopping the greens and chard (super fine, almost a chiffonade) and then adding juice from 2 lemons, a handful of chopped toasted pine nuts, a handful of parmesan cheese, some olive oil and salt. Delicious, and the greens have a completely different flavor this way than they do when you cook them. It's a lot of chopping, but a really filling and nutritious winter salad!

Gastronomica is such a great magazine! It doesn't have many recipes (sometimes just one) but the food writing is so educational.

If you are considering California, visit Santa Barbara. Having moved here after living in San Francisco, I have found that it's not more expensive (although it is expensive compared to most other places...think $1200 for a decent studio), the weather is delightful, plenty of parking, downtown is totally walkable, farmer's market is amazing, and the people are so friendly. But if you crave seasons, this is not your place. Also, if you find the right neighborhood, LA is pretty cool.

I'll be generous and say any more than 5 pillows is too many. 2 for sleeping, two other ones, and if you REALLY need one foofy pillow, then fine. Just one. My mom once went to a bed and breakfast where the bed had a ton of tiny little satin pillows, and a silver tray with little porcelain animals on it. She was laughing so hard! Who cleans all that stuff? Why put it on the BED?

Amy Sedaris recommends giving postage stamps. I think it's great! Often when you move, everything is packed up and you need those little things right away...

I agree with mxjohnson - the price is ridiculous. That's hovering around $8-10 a square foot. You can buy marble tile for that much, and this is PLASTIC! That said, I love the idea...

Part of me wants to tell you to get one dish in every color: it would look so beautiful in your cabinet and on the table! But, if you do want matching dishes, go with a light color, not necessarily white, but light and neutral. Food looks best served on white, it's true. But that's usually because of the high contrast between white plate and food. So choose something that keeps that contrast going.

If you dab a spot of hot glue on the inside lip of the test tube and then attach a micromagnet, you can stick them to the fridge (or other magnetic surface) and use them as bud vases. I second the vote for Penzey's spices. Their cinnamon is hands down the most aromatic cinnamon I've ever cooked with!

It's always so special (and rare) when the planets align and I have enough money saved to get a designer piece! My first was an Eames Storage Unit, which I was able to afford because my Herman Miller rep gave me a GREAT discount! I love it, it's so cute with it's little dimpled plywood panels. I will ALWAYS keep it, and I dream of buying 2 more and making a room divider with all three. One can dream...

When having a dinner party, I do a once-over of my friends general food allergies/ avoidances. But I would not cater to someone who has such a long list of them! If someone is so picky, have THEM bring a dish. A couple of my vegan friends actually bring their own meals sometimes. That way, they can enjoy everyone's company at the party and stick to their special diet. For your situation, I vote for the cheese and crackers plate. Maybe some marcona almonds. Don't let your cooking creativity be held hostage by a lone picky eater!
