When you go from the sofa to the sink, take your empty coffee mug with you. That is my general rule for keeping things tidy around the house. That, plus a 10 minute clean here and there. Vacuum floors on Monday, clean shower on Tuesday and so on. I rarely need to spend half of Saturday cleaning the house. Ironically, I have very messy friends whose place is usually a disaster zone, and they are always having big cleaning binges and spending hours over it.

I might be the only one, but I much prefer the 'before'.

How about a vine with edible fruit? I am in Australia so I don't know what will grow in your region. Passionfruit, maybe? Or you could espalier a couple of fruit trees along the fence.

Oh wow. I don't live in America, so reading these comments has been fascinating. They have given me a better insight into the realities of living in your country than anything I've read before. I had no idea that so many people lived in so much fear and that there was so little sense of community. I know that isn't the case for all of the commenters, but still. wow.

Here in Australia I saw one recently that said 'Keep calm and stop carrying on', which raised a smile.
