I went to college in Lexington in the early 90's and LOVED visiting McConnell Springs. It always felt like a small wilderness . . . . ah, to be young and in college again.

What a great idea!! We did a Superhero Birthday party for our son's 4th last year - I made capes and masks for every kid and they were a HUGE hit! Nearly a year later and all the kids still have their capes and often wear them to school. It makes me happy (and worth all the work I spent making them) just to see one still being worn! :) http://www.liayf.blogspot.com/2011/06/time-to-hero-up.html

The archway was cool to look at, but not cool to live with. It created a cave of the dining room and blocked light everywhere. A huge space was cut up into little caverns.

People buy houses for many reasons, including location, size, and functionality. It's o.k. to change a house (even drastically) so that it becomes more functional. While the brick was interesting, it was simply an asthetic element and not functional.

Oh, how I will miss Maurice. He was one of the few children's authors who could understand a child could be angry, stubborn, rude, and more observant than most adults. That childhood was not all sweeness and roses, but that life was scary sometimes, and unkind, but that children were strong and resilient.

Soon after my now 4yo son was born I bought "The Night Kitchen" - it was one of my favorite books as a child! Some of the first books we read together were the "Little Bear" series, which I adored as a child and again as an adult, ad the Piggle-Wiggle books. My son found "Higgelty Piggelty Pop" to be hilarious, and I think he will enjoy it even more as he gets older.

Finally, we see the PNW Ballet's Nutcracker every year, and I ADORE the sets. If you are ever in Seattle during the Christmas season, it is a must-see production. Here are some pictures from previous productions - simply wonderful!! http://www.google.com/search?q=pnb+nutcracker+pictures&hl=en&qscrl=1&nord=1&rlz=1T4IRFC_enUS353US353&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=se2pT-D2GaTe2QXgx6CoAg&ved=0CEQQsAQ&biw=1366&bih=626

Ah-maz-ing!! I agree with Littlemisssunshine - this is why we need artists in the world. To help us see the miraculous in the mundane.

Yes, the pictures are a bit funny, and a bit not.

Co-sleeping is definitely an individual family choice. With that being said, my DH and I nixed co-sleeping when our son was 7 days old and we both woke up in the middle of the night from our lack-of-sleep-induced comas to our our arms draped across his tiny swaddled body and him gasping for air. He immediately went into his own crib and stayed there every night thereafter.

We don't smoke, we don't drink, and he was a summer baby so we didn't use blankets (just a lightweight swaddle). We were just bone-exhausted sleep-deprived parents who didn't want to smother our little one. And, to those who are concerned that co-sleeping is the best way to support breastfeeding, I dragged myself out of bed multiple times a night to BF and continued to BF until he was 2 years old.

Waaaghhhghg! (Wookie speak for AWESOME!). The kid is super cute and the bandolier on the dog is too much!

Our 4yo son, Lukas, LOVES all things Star Wars. He was, of course, helped along a bit by his parents, his vintage Millinium Falcon, and Legos.

He hasn't seen any of the movies (we are waiting until he is a bit older), but knows the story from the sanitized but seriously cute Lego book of Episode IV. He's gone so far as to quote "this is not the boy you are looking for" when he is found during hide-and-seek.

We are having a joint Star Wars party for his 5th birthday this summer with 2 of his friends (girl and boy) who have similar birthdays. They are excited to dress up as Luke, Leia and Han Solo. He, of course, will be Luke! :)

Love, love, love that she kept the green table and chairs! And, although I wouldn't live in such a bright white space, I agree that for an art studio it reflects light cleaner and aids the eye in discerning colors. Great studio!

My husband and I love our latex mattress! We needed a firm matress, but did not want the fumes associated with traditional foam mattresses. It came out of the wrapper smelling like nothing - fabulous! 2 years later, my back feels tons better and the matress is holding up very well.

The painting is a great idea!

As for objects in the room, I would LOVE to see something like a white pillow with a pink silhouette of a typically "boy" object or toy - like a dump truck, a crane, or R2D2!!

Hilarious!! I really love #2

I didn't really understand Legos until I had a child and he turned 4. Now it's a Lego-thon every week. He also has several bins of mashed together toys - and 1 put-together X-Wing fighter on a shelf that he plays with sometiems. It's so wonderful that I haven't let him take it apart, although he sometimes asks to do so because he's dying to get at all the special pieces to build something else!!

Also, when we asked him about what kind of kindergarten he would like to attend in the fall (we have a bit of a choice here), he said he only wanted two things: (1) a place where he could learn how to read, and (2) a classroom that had Legos. :)

Very cosy! And, the tub for toys is great!

When the baby starts crawling, you might want to consider a few more things down lower for the baby to look at. Perhaps a long shatter-proof mirror under the window, and a book box (rather than a shelf that could be pulled off the wall).

I hear you about not wanting a pastel/WinniethePooh/babybaby theme for a nursery. Focusing on a comfortable room, rather than cartoon characters, gives it much more longevity. My son (Lukas) is now 4 and his room still looks mostly the same as when he was a baby (except he now has a twin spindle bed instead of a crib). Good basic color on the walls, nice blue stripy rug, vintage child rocking chair, hand-made car quilt (his dad's quilt made by his dad's grandma), and art by local artists. He still loves it!

Great investment for $90! And, the color is probably a reflection of the renter's personal taste - bold for some but perfect for him (I might have done the bottom cabinets too, since it's such a contrast between the blue and white)

A small space is a perfect place to put something bold - and this wallpaper is definitely bold! Not my personal choice, but charming and lively.

I LOVE this post!! We are a book-loving family - so we added several built-in bookshelves to our eat-in kitchen/dining room when we bought our 1909 house, and also have stand-along shelves in the living room. Books near a table, where we can spread out, is perfect for us.

However, now that we have a child, it's not nearly enough to house our collection. Our 4 year old son already has over 500 books of his own - not one of them a Disney movie book. He collects more each month (Goodwill is a great place for gently used, classic kids books) and he is overrunning the space! We need to install more bookshelves and I really like the ideas on this post!! :)

We've got most everything we need (or want) - 1909 home with original floors, doors and cast iron tub, 3 bedrooms, decent closet space, lovely open kitchen with TONS of windows to let in natural light, lots of families with kids and we are 3 blocks from a small neighborhood "town center." We have annoying neighbors, but we can live with them.

It took us nearly 8 years to refirbish, one project at a time, but we love where we live. We feel fortunate, to say the least.

What Americans Want Most in a Home

We just don't use dryer sheets. Or pretty much any cleaning product that has hazardous chemicals. Both I and my son are sensitive to the chemically-created smells, so it's not an option.

Plus, a good cotton cloth goes a long way toward cleaning (even if it doesn't "coat" the baseboards with something or create static).

Dryer sheets have worse ingredients than animal fat. A recent study by the University of Washington about the toxins in dryer sheets found that typical dryer sheets used in household dryers emit over 25 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the dryer vent emissions, including seven hazardous air pollutants (HAPs ) and two probable carcinogens (a list is included at the end of the study). Virtually NONE of the VOCs were listed on the ingredient list of the dryer sheets - they instead listed "perfume" or "softeners". Amazing and sad.

Lovely concept, and I like the idea of bringing a garden inside. :)

But, doesn't Tokoyo get cold in the winter? Does the house stay warm in the winter with so many windows? And, how secure is a glass/curtain house (every city has a bit of crime)?
