100 years ago, pink was a color for baby boys because it was considered too strong, and baby girls were dressed in blue. Who cares what colors are used in a room - this one is a ton of fun and will age well for an older kid!

We attended a Korean Dol for the first child (Phoebe) of a couple with whom we had been friends for many years. We were amazed at how many people were invited!! And, Phoebe looked incredibly sweet and beautiful in her Hanbok. It makes me wish I came from a heritage that made such a big deal about the 1st birthday.

Adorable!! And, the tipping hazard is part of the fun . . . I remember my little sis whipping around the corners just so one wheel would come off the ground. WHEEEEE!!!

Laugh like a crazy person - that's all you can do. Try it now - bwahh, haaah, hahhhaaa!!!

And, scope out a local thrift shop to tide you over - picnic blanket and a few dishes for meals, a few funky clothing items, something to sleep on (buy the mattress new if you can). This will make for a great story later, even though you feel insane right now.

I always wondered about the floating stairs with no rails . . . . we used to use cardboard to slide down them. The open side made it more exciting!

@bellasurfer13 - Like many cities, there are more dogs in Seattle than kids. Tons of dog parks and even doggie daycare centers! Just check out the specific rentals - landlords will have their own preferences. And, cross-reference with the location of dog parks.

Hear, hear. My 5yo is in school all day, and I work all day too. Even though he has a great school with lots of opportunity for outside time, we try to have as much unstructured play time as possible when he gets home and on the weekends. Too much planning is just too much planning - not enough fun or spontaneity. I love the games he comes up with the our next-door-neighbor 5 year old. We actually have a hole in our adjoining fences simply so the boys can play, whether it is climbing, stomp rockets, or just running around with swords pretending to be pirates.

I'm a bit sad that next year he will be going to a public school that only offers a single 20 minute recess for its entire 6 hour school day (we can no longer afford his private school). Unstructured play time at school helps kids to develop social skills and is a necessary component of childhood development. This article from the AAP shows how the reduction of recess in schools in response to testing demands is actually detrimental to children. http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/131/1/183.full#sec-1

We live in and LOVE West Seattle!! It is a bit pricey to have a city zipcode, but we are raising small children and love the mix of small neighborhood, urban proximity and the beach. And, don't knock the schools. While nearly 1/2 of Seattlites send their kids to private schools, the public schools are not as terrible as they are made out to be.

Just in West Seattle we have Alki Elementary which is one block from the beach and has a wonderful readers/writers program, Schmitz Park has an innovative math program, Lafayette has a program for kids who test as "advanced learners", there is also the new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) school, Pathfinder K-8 has a great program that focuses on community and teaches about native peoples, and Gatewood has a great arts program. A few other schools are struggling with test scores and facilities, but as any parent can tell you a building is not the only thing that makes a great school community - it's dedicated parents, teachers and administration.

Black-out curtains to block out the blinding street light just outside our bedroom window, white noise machine (from Conair - very simple) and earplugs (for the husband's snoring). :)

People's sitting and sleeping habits can be pretty strong. As single people, both my husband and I preferred the right-hand side of any bed for sleeping. When we married we made a deal that if I gave up "my" side of the bed, he had to give up his habit of sleeping with his arms on the top of the covers (which made suggling difficult). Such a small thing, but it took us both years to adjust to the new sleeping configuration. :)

I wish our neighbors would read this. We both have small kids, but only their kids climb the tree between our tiny backyards and peer at us during dinner on the deck (or any meal on a nice day outside). If we are lucky, they don't also try to have a conversation with us while we try to eat.

Store them if you have the space and they are of good quality.

However, if they are just particle board, or other less durable material, then they won't last and should be donated to a preschool or daycare center. And, if you do donate them, don't forget to get a lovely photograph to frame and put where the kitchen a theater once were!

Oh, and our son is now 5 1/2 and we have a 3 month old daughter. Because the cost of housing is so high, both of us must work. But, the minimum cost for quality infant care is $1800+ per month (with waitlists that are 1+ years long). So, it's not really an affordable place to live for many families.

San Francisco: Most Restaurants, Most Hills, But Least Kids

I've heard there are more dogs in Seattle and SF than kids, and I wouldn't doubt it. We visited SF from Seattle when our son was 2 years old. We went to a local park and noticed that it was primarily used by dogs, the tiny "kids area" was old and dirty and fenced off from the rest of the park (probably to keep the dogs out). We saw very, very few kids on our visit - and just 3 came to the park.

I would guess it's the cost (and the difficulty in finding a consistently good public school) that keeps many families away. We still live in Seattle (not the outskirts or the suburbs, but with a Seattle address), but are grateful to live in a family-friendly neighborhood. There are a ton of kids on our block. But, Seattle is notorious for having terrible public schools (along with a few very good ones), and not everyone can afford private.

Very, very ingenious! The lofted space above entryways always seemed odd to me - difficult to decorate and a general waste of space. This is so much nicer!

It's almost like he has his own train compartment with a sleeper! Super functional and so much fun! Does it also hold the weight of an adult? Those boys grow quickly. :)

p.s. Love, love, love the space items - the rocket and solar system.

Sarah and Oren - super cute skyline shelf and red dresser!! And, the handles are very clever. What a great solution to limited space. And, I second the comment that you could probably sell those skylines shelves to plenty of parents.

Don't listen to the naysayers. If your space works for you and your baby, then that's fine. You will be getting a TON of unwanted comments and advice now that you are parents. Just try to tune it out. :)

Beautiful room! This is about the size of our nursery for our 6 wk old daughter - it's 81 square feet (also with no closet like yours). I like the small space - it makes it nice and cozy!
