i'd really recommend using a carpet knife rather than just a plain utility knife. it's set at an angle that means that it cuts much better as you pull it along the line. they are really cheap too--like 5 bucks with a few blades.

my flor tiles lasted quite a while and i never had trouble with the dots. I suppose that because i did it basically wall to wall, there was very little stress on them.

bottom line--this is a great product and the cost really is competitive when you do the math on area rugs (nice ones) or wall-to-wall carpeting. and with those solutions, like others have said, you can't pull out a ruined section to clean or replace it.
