so.... about the wall to wall carpet....
the apartment i now live in is what i like to call "the beige box" because there are beige walls, beige carpets, beige beige beige.... my problem is that area rugs don't reall work because it's too soft, crappy carpet - they replaced it when we moved in, but the original carpet had turned pink. beige to pink - yuck.... but area rugs on it just don't look that great. and when you have that light colored carpet, i feel like area rugs can make the space looks smaller - with phot number 3's darker grey carpet, an area rug can bring color in but without shrinking the space - is there anyone else out here on the internets that has found ways to deal with the beige box? i find that this cheap carpet can cheapen the look of many different kinds of nice furniture - i.e. the tip today about painting your shelves a bright color - they would look like cheap furniture i picked up on the side of the road in my apartment (although, when i again get to have hardwood - even parquet - floors, it would be lovely)

tristacoop - I live in the ham too (Birmingham, AL) and here are a couple tips/things I've learned along the way:
1. From what I understand, the whole idea behind humans and sweat is that sweat is our body's way of cooling down - we get hot, we sweat, said sweat evaporates and as it does this, our body temp lowers - i.e. People in the sahara don't drink hot liquids when it's hot so that their internal temp matches the external temp (meaning that our body expends less energy trying to cool us down), but instead (given the dry climate), it is intended for the sweat to evaporate and cool us off.
2. Always have a sheet. Whether or not #1 is true, it works for me. I need something to cover up with, or toss off. Must be a security thing but it works for me.
3. I have used the frozen washcloth for the following 3 circumstances; hangovers, migraines (unrelated to hangovers) and HOT AND HUMID 4+ months of ridiculous summer. (according to #1, that's why it feels so much hotter down here - it's so humid, our sweat can't evaporate). This is my FAVORITE. THING. EVER.
4. Sleeping naked (nekkid, depending on who you are/what you are doing...) is a big no no. Sleeping in a pool of sweat that is not going to evaporate is never a good thing.
******On iPhone that won't let me go back up - if freezing a wash cloth, keep a bath towel folded up near your bed. No wet startling wet spot when you leave it on the bed and when wash cloth heats up, you have a nice cool towel left over.
5. POPSICLES. LOTS OF THEM.

all that said - it's definitely above 90 degrees very often during the summer nights and I sleep with it on 75-77 - 82 cat degrees during the day. Not impossible without, but ac at night is worked into my budget. On nights when it is 77 or below - window/fan technique is awesome.

i've recently come to understand that the divvying up of household chores is (usually) a problem area in all marriages (as I look my big step in the face coming Nov. 14...). we have the problem of both being very busy (full-time workers also in school trying to graduate...) and both using that busy-ness to shirk household responsibilities....until the sink is so full that one of us gets really irritated that the other one is doing nothing. it's usually the both of us doing nothing when that happens, though. so i feel like the excel would be a great way to even just keep couples on task. i don't make lists to be able to cross something off, i often keep a list just to make sure i am reminded about who/what i want to be and that involves being cleanly - so why not keep a list in order to keep being cleanly a priority? good post - can we have an "i like this" button like on fb? :)

you can get the spouts at bed bath and beyond - the ones i got were for liquor, i think. my grandfather did this for my mom when i was a little kid - he used a blue skyy vodka bottle and my mom still has it :)

OOOOHHHH I love mâche! We ate it a lot when I lived in France. It's so rarely found here in Alabama, and when it is, it's expensive. We used to eat it with a white dressing called sauce crudité - if anyone knows where to find that, I'd be so happy. You can't find anything like it here. Or at least, I can't.

bf and i have a very small tv on a dresser, yes, in front of the bed. in front of the bed because we have no where else to put it and are lacking in furniture.

also, i like it because, and i'll admit, i get really freaked out at night sometimes. i mean so spooked i can't sleep or move and don't even want to get up to go to the bathroom. probably some psychological disorder of some sort. but i deal with it by turning on the food network and putting the volume on very low. they don't play horror movie commercials so i have nothing to worry about. asleep within minutes.

so i have to have a tv in the bedroom. (preferably small and out of the way)

Just to set the record straight - my name will not be on the lease, or any of the bills - that was never part of the plan - the plan was to have all that in HIS name, and me have mine for my apartment in mine. i believe i misrepresented that. it was just mentioned becuase that's how it started out, and that was what our arguments were based on. but you guys are right about the apartment, though. it would be better if we both had our own apartments where neither is the one we lived in together. CQ in DC brought up many points that I think i was initially ignoring - we didn't want to give up that apartment, since we have every intention of moving back in with eachother - but that's a moot point now that the landlord will be moving to costa rica within the year.... and there will be better apartments :) i like to think that we are making a mature decision by knowing that we both need to grow individually before we can grow as a couple, and taking the appropriate actions to accomplish that. we share 2 dogs and love each other very much and plan to just live seperately and date until after college. i mean, i'm 22 - i would like to marry him some day, but not now and not knowing there are goals that both of us need to accomplish that we can't do (or do easily) by living together. in any case, que sera sera and i'm taking my stuff with me.

ps i go see the new apartments on friday. :)

jenny in dc -

i hadn't thought about all that (2nd paragraph). leaving the stuff there was my idea as a temporary solution so i didn't have to rent a storage unit. also, the apartment is _our_ apartment. i did find it, but both our names are on the lease. i assume he will be paying his half of the rent and bills, but everything else will come from mom and dad because he will be living with his little brother. i plan to bring all this up soon, about the fact that we decided this to improve our relationship and NOT so he can slack off and live with his brother (the thing is that his brother recently had an acute psychotic break and bf feels he needs to take care of him).

however !!!

i just got a call from a rental agency that owns some apartments i had previously viewed. one i liked that was not available has come open!!! and it's in my price range!!

those are all very true, and very good tips, curtis.

i'm not changing anything that she doesn't want. i've gone through my phase of painting everything dark and brooding. (lived in a very dark blue bedroom for way too long).

right now, it has light hardwood floors, sage green walls, her cedar chest, a light wood armoire, and as the headboard, two large, old, blue-ish colored shutters. the bed is underneath the BIG BIG long window, and on the adjacent wall, there is another big window, but not as big. it's kind of french country, but no frills. just antique and simple looking furniture. it's awesome. that's why i don't want to bring anything of mine in, because it clashes. also, i want to make this as impermanent as possible. if i don't have all my crap there, i'm less likely to stay forever. i'm also hoping that by not having it all there, i'll be more likely to get rid of most of it.

the bathroom is similar to your bathroom, curtis, if i remember correctly. pink and black? no? it has that 50s tile but is pink and blue. the person who appraised it said that it brought a lot of value to the house, but it really is hideous. i have always dreamed of it being all white, since it is a very small and dark bathroom - just a tiled shower - also pink and blue - but it has no light. anyway, she brought up to me the other day that a friend of hers had her bathtub glazed and would like to do it with the bathroom and if i moved in would i help her? heck yes, i would!

we will also be cleaning out her garage and her den/study/no-w-the-junk-room. she should be very happy to finally get that done!

does glazing require a lot of upkeep?
