I just moved into an unfurnished rental house with two male roommates. They're both programmers, so I expected to be able to make most of the design decisions around the house. I quickly discovered that one was happy with everything I did and the other... he wanted to be a part of every single decision: couches & tables (understandable), lighting, rugs, and even the tiny things like curtain rods, throw pillows, art, shelves, etc. I can no longer craigslist for fun items because he insists that everything be new (and preferably from Ikea - even the art). No choice can be made without a discussion.

So far I've been pretty good at pleading my case and was lucky enough that I already owned a lot of furniture before the move, but it is difficult to make decisions knowing that sometimes a person won't like it simply because they weren't involved in the choice.

When Tastes Merge: One Home, One Too Many Opinions

Many of the things I don't like now, I liked before. Many of the things I like now, I expect not to like later. Though I respect that people can put whatever they want in a room, I still have to agree that, at least for the time being, I'd like a few trends to subside. Here's my list of cliche'd items I don't want to see for a while (but I may end up dong myself as some point anyway):

- taxidermy heads (real, fake, paper, doesn't matter)
- chevrons
- props in rooms that get removed as soon as the photo has been taken
- reupholstering chairs with so many conflicting fabrics/painting with so many colors so that they look strange anywhere but on a pedestal
- living room after living room without a television. There are still a lot of people out there who still own television (even if only to play video games and watch movies), right?
- super minimalist rooms (ex. large room with nothing but a mattress and a bit of bedding)
- vintage writing on everything. This is 2010, not 1940! I love the old text, but I don't believe that this person using these items today actually exists.
- "I spray painted it and now it is good!"
- words painted directly on the wall
- books as art (but, you know, times change. I have my books in color order and it is waaay easier for me to find them now.)

I sleep better when my cat is on the bed and she seems happy to snuggle up to me. Snuggling in bed is our #1 bonding time (and breakfast is #2). :)

I made my first real furniture purchase over this last weekend (I'm 23). After scouring craigslist for a couch for weeks and finding that my boyfriend didn't like vintage couches, I finally found something he liked (not vintage, though). I immediately cleaned the whole house, rearranged multiple times, texted a photo to my mom, and have been talking about it more than a "normal person" would probably talk about a couch.

How Old Were You? First Large Furniture Purchase?

I'm hoping to move out from my parent's house soon and have mixed feelings about leaving the dogs (Great Dane and Pug). It gets really irritating to have a 1-year old Great Dane barking at you while you're on the computer every day in hopes that you'll go throw a ball around. Sometimes I can't do work because I know I'll come into another room to find something destroyed. On the other hand, when I'm cold at night, nothing warms me up better than a gigantic cuddlehound.

It's so exciting seeing things from the Northwest! Anyone who's meandered down Alki during the summer would remember this place!

My only problem with those IKEA wooden hangers is that items with straps (tanktops, dresses) and items with wide necks don't fit. White plastic hangers tend to have a little hook/something to catch clothing so it doesn't fall off!

This is amazing. I'm moving out to my first place soon and definitely need at least one piece of furniture I can revel in. (Okay, so I have a table I love, so maybe I need TWO items to revel in?)
