Beautiful question. The items that I use come from my family. When my grandfather passed away I took his old work bench from the garage and that is what I use to cut patterns on today. I have the old cash register from my grandparents restaurant. I use my grandfather's camera often. It reminds me of all the vacations we took together and the pictures I took on that camera as a child. I sew on my mom's sewing machine. I guess I like to surround myself with items I can use!

I agree mooninfog. Make your own or support artists that do make gorgeous quilts. Quilting has so much heritage and it is great to see that people are still quilting. They are also a form of art and are incredibly time consuming, which explains their much deserved higher price.

If you are in Chicago I would also suggest Chainlink http://www.thechainlink.org/. They have a ton of bike events, and information on trails and are all around an awesome resource.

I do a lot of sewing (in fact it is my part time business) and it has all been done on my mother's 1970 something Singer. For someone who is just starting out I would highly recommend a search on Craigslist for an older Singer (or Bernina, which many people love). The newer Singer's just are not made like they used to be! In Chicago there are still a few old sewing stores and they often have one for sale, which is all tuned up and ready to go for under $100.

I save grocery bags or paper from packaging and I use it because it is better for the environment. I tie it up with bits of ribbon, twine and string that I've saved throughout the year. Everyone always knows which package is from me.

I had difficulty understanding the layout of my ballot and was extremely frustrated and worried that my vote wouldn't be counted because I screwed up. I don't consider myself dumb, especially since I have a Masters degree in English and a Masters in International Public Service. The ballot was poorly designed and there was no effective communication on how to fill it out. So please don't assume that if someone can't read the ballot it is because they are 'dumb'.

My bathroom closet is actually an old buffet and so my towels have to fit in a drawer. They only if if I fold them in half and then half again. If I fold them Martha's way I can't get the drawer to close!

I'm so glad to know Tatine is still going. I agree it would be hard to choose something since scents are rather personal, but all of her candles smell so delicious. I've been buying her candles for years and they burn really well and last a long time.
