I moved into a brownstone in September and struggled with ants until January when their colonies finally started dying off. We used mint oil, then terro, then real kill ant baits. In that order. We wanted to keep it natural, but couldn't since the apartment was infested. In January winged females (would-be queens that would mate then comeback and start colonies to replace the dying ones stated to emerge). Every morning for over two weeks I plucked about ten a day from my curtains. We have colonies directly under our brick floor with dozens of pin size ant holes everywhere not to mention the gap of earth between the brick floors and brick walls. So far this spring there are few tiny babies that we've stated fighting with mint oil. I've read a lot about ants over the last few months so here are some tips.

be careful with in using too much essential oils as they might be harmful to pets (especially little ones)

nothinlikeadame - like haley's said, borax isn't a good idea.

BambiJo - terro will work on ants that like sweest, but not oil eating ants. maybe you have several varieties. also putting the drops on scotch tape makes cleanup easier than directly on a surface

newyorkdoll7 - maybe your mixture sprinkled on tape then taped down on the edges might be better than olive oil since many insects such as roaches and ants eat grease and grease residue.

I live in a brownstone (rental) where the brick paving from the yard is carried though the interior including the bathroom. I absolutely hate it! It never feels or looks clean no matter how much I clean it and it's infested with ants that have colonies directly under the brick and make their way through the brick and mortar! Before moving in I vowed to never rent a carpeted apartment again, but had no idea I could hate brick floors (and walls) as much as I do now. It's too bad because it's a nice apartment otherwise and when you first see it you think charming (as I did), but to live with it and in it is a completely different story and despite the apartment's other beautiful features. I can't wait to move! I really needed to vent. Sorry.

Very nice open feel. I like that there's recess lighting in addition to the beautiful chandelier and that her very old cat is shown along with gorgeous lab. Also that she has a sidewalk find!

Does anyone know where the black leather arm chairs are from or of some like it (shown in the 3rd AT pic or 1st NY times pic)? I've been looking for something similar (with slender arms) and haven't had much luck yet.

I would make a window like opening to the kitchen that's a similar size and height to the smaller windows or to the cabinets, move the credenza to that wall (where it can also serve as a buffet table), install built-in shelves with doors where the credenza is now and at the same height (leaving some wall space, paint the table or get a round one and still use it as a desk and upholster the chairs with blue fabric similar to what's inside your cabinets. The current wall color's really nice. So, I wouldn't change that.

I do use paper towels, but not often. Instead, I usually use white cotton dish towels that look like large napkins (not terrycloth.) They are all the same because when they are all dirty - I wash them all at once and air dry them. Besides a dish sponge, I also have a designated sponge for the bathroom (just cut a corner off an old dish one - to differentiate them) and newspaper and vinegar is excellent for cleaning windows.
