Wow, that place is amazing. I would move in a second.

I think the points of this being "unrealistic" are certainly true in the US. But we all can make decisions to live closer to where we work and (OMG) ride a bicycle. Riding a bike, going to the market, its all about making it a part of your routine. Commute time is a major issue in the US, not in most of Europe. Many Europeans work as many hours as Americans, but they (luckily) get to live a short distance from their job. It makes a huge difference.

The chair looks like an Eames armchair, but I've never seen one in pink before. Maybe a knockoff?

Love the Goldenbooks. Great room. There is something perfectly Portland about it.

The room brought up a question though. Is there anything to look out for when buying or giving your child vintage toys?

In the store it seemed unstable. On top of that, it was impossible to figure out how to fold it up! After 5 minutes, I gave up.

Microfiber water (distilled, if you have it around). Works wonders.

Those "cleaners" are not only hazardous, they do a terrible job at cleaning.

Eventually, yes. But they have a lot of work to get me. I am tempted by a $99 iphone, but not by doubling my monthly bill. Thats just ludicrous. (Not to mention needing to have a text messaging service on top of a data plan.) My complaints are specific to iphone/ATT, sure, but really I need a phone to make phone calls, and a 'phone' does that just fine.

I first had a credit card when I was 18. Didn't use it for a few years. Then I did, and was quickly in debt. Took another year to get out. Lesson learned. But beyond giving a credit card to a child/student at a far-off university, who might actually have some emergency spending, it seems like a bad idea. Especially if text-message rates are any indication of what the parent is in for.

Sweet! I just ordered a DB2 from Antennas Direct and am in the process of dumping my cable company. I'm actually hooking it up through a Tivo unit, since my LCD doesn't have a digital tuner. This allows me to retain a DVR and buy shows/movies via Amazon on Demand. Cable is a rip in comparison!

I really think the trick to making free digital/HDTV work is to invest in a good outdoor antenna. Its totally dorky, but it results in huge savings. Who needs 8 flavors of the Discovery Channel?

Los Feliz is great for a walkable neighborhood, and easy access to the Red Line. On that note, I would also recommend South Pasadena, or anywhere in LA along the Gold Line (Highland Park, El Sereno, Heritage Square). Either of these would be great - especially if you can commute via rail to work, and don't like driving.

What about the Dell Inspiron Mini 12? Not sure if it is in the US yet, but seems like an ideal candidate for running Ubuntu and having a nice, basic "netbook".

The aliens would arrive in ships like the ones on Boston's 1976 debut album "Boston." Naturally, with their extra-terrestrial love of butt-rock, I would imagine once they heard "Hotel California" it would become a theme song of their impending take over of planet earth.

i recently bought one of these -

http://www.envirocyclesystems.com/US/info.html

it is not "small" but very self-contained, and makes turning the compost super easy. plus there should be some "compost tea" after a while.

i noticed the post said the worm composter should reduce odor. but you should keep in mind compost shouldn't stink. actually, if it stinks you might need to add more brown stuff (dead leaves or grass, for instance).
