I thought maybe I was just spewing my initial reaction yesterday, and maybe I needed to spend some more time with it before I could appreciate what you were trying to achieve with this redesign. But, no.

After spending some more time thinking about the changes, I've realized that knowing that I'm missing content because it's hidden under categories doesn't make me want to go click through the categories in search of it. Instead, it just annoys me and makes me not want to visit the site any longer. That's disappointing.

I have to wonder if you did any research into your user's motivations and mental models of both the site content and your brand while you worked through this redesign. Given the kind of feedback I'm seeing here, I'm trying to imagine what kind of research could have compelled you to go in this direction. Honestly, this feels more like a dilution than a strengthening of your brand.

OK, I'll take off my user experience and brand identity hats now. I need to go find a new site to fulfill my home design jones.

A friend of mine has been debating whether or not to keep a very large postcard collection that has accumulated over the years. I think I just found a reason to suggest keeping it. I think I could entertain myself for hours just looking at that wall.
