I know that in our community you can get free mulch from the city. They just shred what they collect from homeowners lawn refuse. Seems like a pretty environmentally friendly way to go about it, don't you think?

Shasta, our kitchens are so alike, it's a little eerie. We're planning a remodel too. I think others have made good points. Dark counters would be very nice. White cabinets always good but can look dingy very easily especially with little once. Maybe consider painting the bottom cabinets dark and going with something lighter up top? If you do do that I would choose lighter countertops though so there's contrast.

The other thing I would think about is the lack of light in your kitchen. Under cabinet lights would be great to show off whatever new back splash you choose. Also, consider a row of pendants over your island. You could use the wiring from that can light, get a converter and put 3 pendants over the island. It would make a big difference. I'd also invest in really high quality hardware...it can really elevate your cabinets.

I'm finding that I'm more of a traditionalist than I ever thought and we found a great 42" table at www.conradgrebel.com. It's solid wood, seats well, has a super tough finish, and is made in the US. Good luck!

When we lived in a city that had an Ikea, my husband and I always joked about needing to train for Ikea before going. I'm definitely not a black belt in Ikea. It takes so much discipline it takes to get through without becoming completely distracted and overwhelmed. I find a very specific list helps. Also, I've totally returned stuff immediately after buying it because my bill was a shocker.

It's really quite lovely. I've been debating whether it's worth it to paint my builder's oak cabinets and I think this post seals the deal. But only a weekend? Really? With sanding and everything?

I've been trying to find something for over the sofa...such an art cliche...and have been having fun in the abstract circles category at allposters.com. They also let you search by color if you're interested. I'm thinking something canvas mounted...hmmm. However, seeing all those circles makes me want to get crafty and just make something myself.
