At some point are houses just going to be giant kitchens and bathrooms with a couple of bedrooms attached?

I would have loved it as a kid.

My only concern as an adult is one of safety. I doubt that firemen check closets when a house is burning...

Is it OK for Kids to Sleep in the Closet?

Growing up a neighbor had an elevator in their 3 story victorian home. It had been installed when the house was built because then elevators were the newest fanciest thing.

They pretty much used it as a closet. The Otis elevator company would send mail (addressed to the original owner of the home) about safety and they considered it just a funny quirk of their home.

Until their daughter was unexpectedly struck with a very serious illness. She could no longer deal with the stairs. They were very happy to be able to have the option of getting that elevator going.

If you have the space and the money I would say that an elevator is a really, really great thing to have. Particularly if you plan to age in place.

I have a collection of globes... but it grew organically.

One (from 1895) was won by my grandmother in a geography bee in 1919. One (from 1947) was made by my father when he was working his way through college making globes at the Replogle factory. One (from 1995) I purchased when I worked for Rand McNally.

There are some more, but they all have a story. I think that kind of collection is timeless.

The kind of collection where one saw a picture and went out to pick them up at the antique store? One will tire of them, and they will be rotated out.

They really aren't that hard to dist... a microfibre cloth and a spin and you are good! My grandmother's has an iron base that is a bear but I wouldn't give it up for anything.

I hesitate to admit I have a similar collection of vintage cameras (all with stories and family history). I am very 'on trend' right now, but 5 years ago or 5 years from now? Not so much.

I use a split keyboard and it has saved my wrists. I use a microsoft natural keyboard I got years ago and I LOVE it.

Another thing that has helped is I made the choice to be 'left moused'. I realized my right wrist was hurting more and I do everything with my right hand it would be good to split the duties and mouse with my left. It took maybe a week to get used to, but it is great. Added bonus - now I can mouse with my left hand while I write or enter numbers with my right hand.

Get rid of the palm trees and the floor mats and the bench. Paint the cabinets (dark brown to match to window?) and likely change out (or at least paint) the cabinet pulls and the lights over the sinks. A fresh coat of paint always makes everything seem more updated. I like the mirrors personally. A single large mirror will be a pain to hang.

It's a nice bathroom. People are just super picky in this buyers market.

So lovely!

I have my grandparents Hi-Fi from the 40s which I plan on converting to a bar. I hope it turns out half as well.

Horrible. It makes my skin crawl to think of what will grow behind the 3d tiles. Also, this will be a cleaning/dusting NIGHTMARE.

This 'cheap fix' will cost a fortune to undo.

The ivy wasn't my taste, but it wasn't the worst thing in the world. She could have worked with that, or painted over it... but this is terrible.

There is a reason that my boss's giant swordfish is hanging in our office. It's hard to decorate around.

However, I will say it looks great over his desk!

I think it is clever for light items that you don't need to get to very often (Christmas ornaments, I'm looking at you).

Otherwise I would be worried about heavier items causing the bins to malform and fall out of the channels, or that I would drop them when pulling them out.

I also am amazed at how high that garage ceiling is! mine is definitely not that much higher than the door track.

I would be tempted to put the fridge (at least) in the dining room in order to get more space in the kitchen... and some counter space in particular.

You are passionate about cooking... are you as passionate about entertaining? If no, then sacrificing the dining room for more kitchen space might be just the ticket.

My brother lives a few blocks away. Added bonus - their house has a combination lock so I know I can always get into their house to get my keys (home and car)

I am a huge fan of hanging things with the 3M command adhesive velcro strips. You can adjust them so much easier than when you have committed to pounding a hole in the wall.

Growing up a good friend lived in a Wright house (Chicago suburbs). I never really considered that all those sleep overs at her house were really unique experiences.

This post has helped me reconsider how wonderful my childhood really was. Thanks!

Having lived in a house with aq painted linoleum floor... NO!

I'm sure somewhere you will find something that will say that if you sand off the gloss on the linoleum and use the right primer and paint it will work. Those people are liars.

A kitchen floor gets a massive amount of wear and tear. Hot pans are dropped, heavy things fall, tons of standing and walking in a tight traffic pattern. Add chairs scraping back and forth and the paint will not wear well.

For me the key is to have two windows with fans... one venting hot air out, and the other bringing cool air in.

Ideally, if you have double hung windows put the fan venting hot air out in the top of the window to pull out that rising heated air.

I really like the yellow door. It really pops against the gray.

Taking the bush down did make a huge difference, and the color is lovely.

I do think it needs a bit more interest or something to break up all that gray. Have you thought about painting the railing white or yellow? Or maybe doing something with what looks like vertical supports on the porch?
