I would agree about the wood species. The likelihood of that floor being pine is slim. It looks exactly like ash to me (or possibly oak), which are both harder woods, which would make sanding the poly out take a longer time. I think the floors are beautiful as is. OR I would sand the floors down to the non-poly natural color and then do a light colored stain and then re-apply the water based poly. Good luck! Whitewash Yellow-y Pine Floors? Good Questions |

As someone who works with reclaimed wood every day, owns a reclaimed wood table and has kids, here is my suggestion: If you want to protect it from the kiddos, make it easier to wipe up after dinner and keep as much of the original recycled wood aesthetics, I would go with a water based polyurethane (satin) or the Vermont Natural finish.
