It's so sad that Canada lives in the dark. We can't use Spotify. Boo

I go pretty crazy every year with the homemade food gifts. I don't know what I'll decide this year yet but in the past I've done: truffles, caramels, beautifully frosted cookies, hot chocolate mixes, homemade marshmallows, cookies galore, and I'm forever gifting jams and chutneys (this year I have made spiced tomato chutney and cranberry-strawberry jam especially for Christmas) along with spiced nuts, toffee, cakes, pies and a favourite among my family homemade vanilla. I usually end up changing my mind a few times when I see new recipes. This is my main form of gift giving but I haven't really found a cost effective way of packaging these things to showcase all the care and time I took to make them. The nice packaging costs a fortune here in Canada.

We're all about comfort and homemade this weekend. Bread pudding for breakfast (indulgent I know) and gnocchi for dinner. On Sunday I run my first half marathon so for dinner I was hoping for something easy and comforting, sloppy joes maybe? On Monday we are having a fakesgiving! (Even though we're Canadian) It was too hard not to get caught up in the excitement, besides my husband and I didn't get to spend our thanksgiving together in October, so now will have to do. Can't wait for it to start!

This was a wonderful read. I find I don't have the time or resources to cook out of the one magazine I subscribe to (Cooks Illustrated). I can't imagine subscribing to more. I read food blogs like nobody's business, which provide me with more tempting recipes than I could never imagine making.

I'm working this weekend, as usual. I made a red pepper and chickpea soup for us today and tomorrow I'm putting a beef and barley stew in the slow cooker. Other than a batch of cookies I think I will not have time for anything else. Happy weekend to everyone with a few days off!

tortilla soup in the crockpot, pumpkin spiced french toast tomorrow morning. I'm making orange and cranberry drop cookies tomorrow and am dreaming of a sausage and lentil stew.

I make Vietnamese coffee every single morning, with only a tsp of sweetened condensed milk. Friends of ours gifted two coffee makers to us when they returned from Vietnam a few months ago, and we've been making them ever since. My favourite way to drink coffee!

My husband and I really totally absolutely love Portuguese food. It is as good as French or Italian food in our opinion, and we've visited 15 European countries. Of course we also love Dutch food since that is what we both grew up with. But Portuguese food is something special.

Yes it definitely might sway me one way or another. I'm intrigued and eager to see where they place their label. Do you think it will be on products in Canada too? Or just the US.

I avoid artificial sweeteners like the plague. I'm very afraid of these man-made unnatural chemicals and what they do to our bodies. My grandmother has/had a brain tumor that we think we caused by her long term use of aspartame. Of course she doesn't think so (how's that for conspiracy? We're not weird I promise, just skeptical.) You won't find me with sugar free-anything gum, liquids, cookies. I prefer my sweets in a more natural, healthy, and safe manner.

It's hard to imagine not caring where your meat came from. Eating mistreated unhappy meat feels like a weight on my heart and I'm in no way, shape or form a hippy vegetarian. I'm an ethical person with a dilemma in my head. I can't understand how the majority of consumers don't think twice about the life they took buying that meat. How could you not want all animals to be treated with care and respect? Isn't that basic? Don't consumers have a conscience? I understand it's easy not to think about it, to buy meat as far away from it's natural state as possible, that way we aren't reminded of what it took to satisfy our own needs.

If you "don't care" you didn't think. Or your heart needs some fine-tuning because all life deserves respect.

I very intentionally write my favourite recipes on index cards, I want the food stained, dog eared recipes to pass on to my own family, the way my mom pulls out hers. It takes time, and often I'll sit down and write a few at a time (until my hand cramps up!) But there is something very personal about hand written recipes. That is why, even though I don't enjoy writing them, when asked for a recipe I write them down on a card to give away. The biggest bonus? I know exactly where they are, the site is never down, and it doesn't matter if my computer is in the shop. I can still cook!

I always make stock with whatever bones are leftover. Fish for sure, turkey around the holidays and chicken anytime we roast a full one. It's a second use of a product we already paid for, why wouldn't we? We get veal bones from my dad, (he raises it) or pay a few dollars at the butcher shop, it's so simple and definitely worth the effort for us.

We're making slow cooker spinach-squash lasagna. Yesterday was a cranberry-apple pie that we devoured! A sweet potato hash is coming up in a few short hours. And many cups of tea, it's freezing!
