I love the transformation, but am I crazy in wondering how some light colored wood shelves can be "outdated"? There doesn't seem to be much about them (in my eyes) that firmly plants them in one era of design or another so I don't really get what's outdated about them. Anyone with a keener eye for this kind of thing care to enlighten me?

Oh my god, and it really works just fine when thawed?? That's an amazing tip! I run into that issue all the time (as evidenced by the half-used carton that is always in my fridge).

I made this over the weekend, but mine didn't come out nearly as smooth! What do you guys think I did wrong? Maybe added ingredients too fast?

Did anyone else have that issue?

On the plus side, it was still absolutely delicious!! I would definitely make this again and hopefully next time, I can have it come out looking a bit more like the photo.

I care less about most of the complaints so far and way more about where that table is from!! I know I've seen it before, but it's so perfect for my place.

Anyone know where it's from or where similar models can be found?

Noooooo thank you. The kids room is pretty cool, but I thought the skyline in addition to the wonderful constellation ceiling was too much.

Mostly, I kind of hate everything? I feel like I shouldn't since so much money was involved, but everyone who commented that there's something very 80's-soap opera about this is right!

Blegh.

I agree with you, daylight, my visible DVD collection is on par with my book collection; I wouldn't DREAM of hiding it!

I love this apartment though. It feels doable and the windows are to die for! It also gives me hope because hearing that it took over a year to find the perfect dining room set makes me think it's not so bad that I'm holding off for the right combo of style/price on the same purchase myself! My crappy card table will do for now. :)

what a great idea! I'm a little intimidated by wallpaper because I tend to love the bolder patterns, but am to nervous to do a main room in it. this seems like the perfect way for me to try out whatever wallpaper I love and transform an oft ignored space into something beautiful!

My movies, like my books, are a point of pride and I have always really hated the idea of stuffing them into some big binder rather than letting them be on display. This is especially true for the boxed sets I own and the Criterion Collections; often, the art is so beautiful on the boxes that it's a total shame to hide it!

It's not that I don't understand the limited space thing (it's a good solution for people with the problem!), I just can't get behind it myself.

I agree with the commenter who suggested you think about what means more to you: space or having a separate bedroom.

Since you live in NY, it might be much more difficult for you than it was for me to find a great deal (I'm in Chicago, which isn't great, but it's a bit cheaper than NY). I live in a studio, but my studio has a separate dining room and kitchen with plenty of room to have people over and get a REAL house-size dining table. I don't feel cramped at ALL!

It sounds like you might prefer to focus on finding a one-bedroom, but if you can find a larger studio (mine's about 500-600 sq. ft.) with the right layout, it's still an upgrade but might be more affordable.

Just some food for thought!

Wow! Awesome transformation!! There's nothing inherently wrong/horrible with the before IMO, but there's so much more personality in the after it's outstanding! Plus the couches and curtains are totally better.

The benefits of couch surfing are limitless!! I understand the objection, but the purpose of the website, to me, isn't really to connect the casual vacationer with a random place to stay. It's about connecting people who genuinely LOVE traveling and want to share their homes and cities with fellow spirits.

I couch surfed for the first time last summer and it was amazing. My host was delightful and I think of her as a friend. I would TOTALLY open my home up to fellow surfers!!

I wish I had surfed more abroad and fully intend to do so in the future.

That first photo melts my heart. God. I would live in the kitchen alone for those windows and do nothing but make food all day long.

That is seriously one of the most beautiful rugs I've ever seen. It's insane! Too bad I'll probably be an old codger before I can ever afford one... haha

The whole site is beautiful, though!

$150 for matting and framing?? Your piece must have been really big! I'm terrible at matting things myself (no seriously, TERRIBLE), but have had things matted at Hobby Lobby for about $20 and that was when I got a double mat (two colors for contrast!) and they installed the mounting brackets on the back for me!

Michael's craft store does the same, but they have to send your prints out of house to be matted whereas Hobby Lobby just does it right then and there; no waiting.

Wow. Everyone is reading WAY too much into this. The post isn't suggesting you roofie your guests and if you don't like Wii games or take-out, or would assume the host was sloppy if you were at a party offering such things, maybe you're the one who should stay home.

They're just suggestions; not steadfast rules you MUST follow.

Ever since we've started having less extended family over on Christmas Day and focusing more on our little unit, my mom has been getting so creative! Last year it was chestnut and fig stuffed cornish hens with lots of sides and at least one pie. The cookies, though, oh the cookies... It's always been a near month long affair making standard gingerbread and sugar cookies then spicing it up with whatever new recipe catches our eye!

I LOVE it!!

Absolutely love it! I DEFINITELY plan on using this as inspiration for the studio I'm moving into! Luckily, the layout of my apartment is literally exactly the same as this one, which will surely help a LOT.
