At the first office jobs I ever had, back when I was 19, all employees were required to clean their desks off at the end of the day. Nothing was allowed to stay on top, we had to put it all in drawers. It was a good habit that trained one to take out only what was needed and put it away right after using it, because who wanted to be sitting there at 5pm cleaning our desks while everyone else was leaving. I have strayed very far from that now, but often look back and wish I could discipline myself to do it again in my home office these days. I have done this in my apartment for the last 20 years. The shelf above teh door in my kitchen holds all my plastic wrap, aluminum foil, storage bags, garbage bags, etc., and boxes of cereal and cat food. In my bathroom, I have a white coated wire shelf, where I keep my towels. I don't have a linen closet, so that's their home. In both rooms, I just have to go up on tippy-toe to reach them. Ick! I am really getting tired of seeing people hang their jewelry on the wall. Besides the fact that it's just more to collect dust, I think it's tacky. I much prefer jewelry boxes hidden away somewhere. I use the Portofino sectioned, lined boxes from Container Store that work really well for this. They used to have a version of the watch box that had four sections in each box. I use one for necklaces (lay them flat) and another for everything else. The little sections are perfect for rings, earring, and bracelets. I don't like my jewelry displayed openly. One Great Idea: Wall Hung Toolbox for Small Item Storage Design*Sponge |

I am planning to hold an apartment sale also, and have been pulling things out of my closets, dusting things off, and putting little price tags on everything -- BUT everyone keeps telling me that most people who go to these things are cheeep and no one will want to pay me more than $5 or $10 for anything. Now, I do have a bunch of smaller cheap items, but really, there are some things that are worth quite a bit. I am selling some of my furniture, too. My prices are still a bargain, and I do put a higher tag on them to allow for haggling but... did you have any high-ticket things and if so, did you manage to sell them? My building is not a quiet one, but usually people have been considerate. I've lived here for over 20 years and now, my most recent neighbor next to me (we share a wall) is the loudest most inconsiderate neighbor I've ever had. She is one of those annoyingly loud talkers, always shouting in her whiny, nasal, upper-east-side-spoiled-bitch voice. The problem is she doesn't know how to speak in a normal tone of voice, and she's often talking on her phone with her caller on speaker. So I hear the whole convo. I know her website URL, her phone number, and how much money she makes because of her loud voice. And yes, she's always on her cell phone in the hallway when she's coming in and out too. AND she never shuts her door properly - always lets it slam behind her - and leaves her shoes, umbrellas, and shopping bags outside her door, which is directly across from mine (about three feet away from my door) and leaves me no room. I am always tripping over her crap! 7 Tips for Keeping the Peace (and Quiet) With Noisy Neighbors |

The plinth isn't just for looks - it's for support. And that looks like one heavy piece of furniture! I think, if you want legs or castors instead of the plinth, you would need a pair or some sort of support (like a beam) in the center as well as on each side. Replace Dresser Base with Casters? A problem I see is that one has to be very careful about any sharp edges and corners that could hurt the birds. And well-designed feeders have the ability to remove the tray where you put the seed and clean them out. Otherwise the birds can get diseases. And, different birds are drawn to different types of openings on birdhouses. Another major thing to consider is how to keep squirrels and cats out. These designs are just way too open.
